Shipyard Welder

Job Summary

This position is responsible for designing, fabricating, repairing, and maintaining metal sheet structures on rigs, ships, and barges.

• Inspect, measure, adjust and test completed metal work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
• Read blueprints, work orders or production schedules to determine product or job instructions or specifications.
• Assemble, align and clamp work pieces into holding fixtures for bonding, heat‑treating or soldering.
• Set up, operate and maintain welding machines/equipment that join or bond components.
• Heat and grind metal parts and components using hand tools, torch or other welding equipment.
• Fabricate and fit substrates as required.
• Monitor welding, burning and fitting processes to ensure parts are not overheated or damaged.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with all safety procedures, rules and regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or equivalent (Education required).
• Intermediate to advanced understanding of mechanical maintenance and knowledge of machines and tools.
• Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Ability to read and understand measurements and blueprints.
• Ability to follow direction and use logical thought processes to interpret instructions and recommend solutions.
• Ability to complete documentation requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to remain focused on customer service both internally and externally.
• Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.

• Ability to lift, push, pull 50 lbs.
• Ability to climb, crawl, stoop, kneel and squat occasionally.
• Manual dexterity with small objects.
• Arm/hand steadiness and multi‑limb coordination.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders to significant heights.
• Ability to work around water.
• Ability to grasp and reach frequently.
• Ability to communicate verbally in person and over two‑way radio.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to work in environments with high dust levels.

• Good visual acuity for tasks such as reading and operating a computer terminal.
