Practical Nurse-Licensed

Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to join the Nursing Department as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The role involves managing a wide spectrum of conditions, including emergency response, acute trauma, chronic disease, wound care, and mental health, within a state correctional facility.

• Implement selective aspects of the nursing care plan (comfort, hygiene, safety measures, nutrition, etc.) under progressive supervision from a Registered Nurse or higher level Practical Nurse.
• Observe patients for changes in physical and/or mental status or behavior, and report significant changes.
• Obtain specimens for laboratory testing as assigned.
• Take vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Administer medication and treatments in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Transcribe physicians' orders and record medication and patient conditions on charts and other records.
• Receive and give change-of-shift reports.
• Request stock drugs, medications, and supplies as assigned.
• Administer CPR in emergency situations.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge patients.
• Gather information about patient's past and current physical and mental status.

• Possession of a current Louisiana Practical Nurse license, a temporary permit, or a multi‑state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact state.
• Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD‑214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire.
• Any qualifying experience based on college credit must be supported by a transcript.

• Appointment Type:
  Classified WAE (when actually employed) – a WAE position without benefits.
• Career Progression Group:
  Licensed Practical Nurse 1, 2, or 3 – filled at the highest level of experience of the selected applicant; salary depends on level.

• Applicants must authorize the HR Office of DPS & C Corrections Services to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) by answering ‘YES’ to the PREA question.
• Shift work may be required; this is a 24‑hour facility.
