Overview
This job acts as a supervisor and provider of care at the point of care to individuals and cohorts within a unit. The role evaluates nursing interventions, coordinates, delegates, and supervises care provided by licensed nurses, registered nurses, and patient care technicians.
Responsibilities- Evaluate nursing interventions by coordinating, delegating and supervising care provided by the healthcare team.
- Serve as a resource for staff for patient care assessment, planning, and evaluation of nursing interventions and facilitate problem resolution through collaboration with unit leadership and other supervisory staff.
- Collaborate with immediate leader and other supervisory staff to identify staff strengths and weaknesses and evaluate staff performance for team members within their span of control.
- Assess risks and benefits of proposed medical interventions, rendering life‑saving treatment in emergency situations.
- Organize, plan, supervise, and provide coordinated patient care within the unit.
- Promote the adoption of nursing protocols and clinical practice guidelines to support evidence‑based practice.
- Manage conflict on assigned shifts and collaborate with other supervisors and unit leadership if further action is needed.
- Collaborate with patient quality, safety, and experience leadership and promote relevant processes.
- Support daily clinical operations by ensuring effective scheduling, staffing, and appropriate clinical supplies and resources are available for patient care.
- Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, ensuring respect for privacy, appropriate introduction to the patient, and communication style.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required for all Ochsner Magnet Facilities.
- Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing. - Experience:
1 year of relevant experience as a registered nurse or 2 years as an LPN in an acute care setting. Preferred: 2 years of relevant experience as a registered nurse. - Certifications:
Current registered nurse (RN) license in the state of practice;
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
- Excellent assessment skills and ability to detect subtle changes in a patient’s condition.
- Ability to provide patient and family education.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medications and their actions, interactions, side effects, and calculations.
- Ability to handle end‑of‑life issues such as decisions to cease life‑prolonging interventions or organ donation decisions.
- Self‑directed and proficient in unit productivity, expense management, regulatory requirements, and quality indicators.
- Proficiency in computers, software, and web‑based applications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to routinely manage priorities and projects involving multiple constituencies.
- Excellent time‑management skills and ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to work in stressful situations while remaining objective and professional.
Medium work:
Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree, pushing and/or pulling controls, and maintaining a production rate pace. Exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue. Occupational risk for communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste.
