East Jefferson General Hospital is seeking an experienced Lead Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our highly specialized Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) team. This unique opportunity combines advanced critical care practice with leadership responsibilities, allowing you to influence patient outcomes, mentor APP colleagues, and contribute to the ongoing success of a nationally recognized cardiothoracic program.

As a CTICU Lead APP, you will care for patients across a complex cardiac and thoracic surgical population, including:

  • Open Heart Surgery
  • Heart Transplant
  • Lung Transplant
  • Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs)
  • Mechanical Circulatory Support
  • Advanced Cardiothoracic Critical Care

Schedule:

  • Full-time
  • 12-hour shifts
  • Day/Night rotation
Position Summary

The Cardiothoracic ICU Lead APP serves as an advanced clinician and leader responsible for delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care to acute and critically ill patients while supporting operational excellence within the APP team.

In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the Lead APP provides guidance, mentorship, education, and support to fellow Advanced Practice Providers, helping ensure safe, effective, and high-quality care across the CTICU.

Key Responsibilities Advanced Clinical Practice
  • Assess and manage complex acute, critical, and chronically ill cardiothoracic patients.
  • Identify urgent and emergent conditions through comprehensive clinical evaluation.
  • Analyze physiologic and diagnostic data to develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Perform advanced therapeutic interventions within approved scope of practice and credentialed privileges.
  • Respond to changes in patient condition and modify treatment plans to optimize outcomes.
Care Coordination & Patient Management
  • Manage and document comprehensive plans of care.
  • Facilitate transitions between levels of care and healthcare settings.
  • Incorporate health promotion, injury prevention, and patient safety principles into patient care.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing teams, pharmacists, therapists, and multidisciplinary team members.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to inpatient APPs.
  • Assist with onboarding, orientation, and training of newly hired APPs.
  • Serve as a mentor and preceptor for APPs, nurses, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Educate APP colleagues and staff regarding policy updates and clinical best practices.
Education & Quality Improvement
  • Serve as an educational resource for patients, families, nursing staff, and providers.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
  • Champion patient safety by identifying opportunities to improve care delivery and reduce risk.
Qualifications Education
  • Master's Degree required
  • Graduate of an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program or
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of Advanced Practice experience in acute or critical care
  • Cardiothoracic ICU, cardiac surgery, critical care, or transplant experience strongly preferred
  • Previous leadership, preceptor, or mentoring experience preferred
Licensure & Certifications

For Nurse Practitioners:

  • Active Louisiana RN License
  • Active Louisiana APRN License
