The Registered Nurse (RN), Eye Clinic Procedure Nurse reports directly to the Eye Clinic Supervisor and supports the safe, efficient delivery of procedural eye care in both the operating room and clinic setting. This position accompanies the ophthalmologist in the operating room, assists with patient preparation and procedural support, and performs approved procedures in the clinic under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDSWorks collaboratively and communicates professionally with the ophthalmologist, Eye Clinic Supervisor, providers, surgical team members, clinic staff, patients, families, and other departments to ensure coordinated, timely, and safe patient care and to promote a positive team environment. Assesses patients prior to procedures or surgery, including review of relevant clinical information, patient/family interview, observation, and input from other members of the health care team.
Performs and documents clinic intake data collection, including chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, weight, basic health history, identified learning considerations, and discharge planning needs as appropriate for the visit. Collects, categorizes, and interprets age-related physical, psychosocial, and cultural data to develop an individualized plan of care in accordance with applicable standards, Medical Center policies, Nursing Services expectations, regulatory requirements, professional practice standards, and state law.
Serves as a patient advocate, resource, and contact person by providing patient education, emotional support, and reassurance to help address patient and family questions or concerns before, during, and after procedures or surgery. Prepares examination, procedure, or operating room areas by gathering supplies, verifying equipment readiness, anticipating the needs of the ophthalmologist and care team, and assisting the provider with examinations and procedures.
Verifies patient identity, procedure, consent, and operative or procedural site in accordance with established safety standards and protocols. Plans, supervises, and assists with patient transfer and positioning to support access to the operative or procedural site while maximizing patient safety, comfort, and injury prevention. Establishes and maintains a clean, safe, and sterile environment by applying principles of aseptic technique, antisepsis, decontamination, disinfection, sanitation, sterilization, and environmental monitoring.
Monitors the patient’s physiological and psychological status and the procedure environment, implementing safety procedures as needed to protect the patient and health care team. Coordinates support service needs during procedures or surgery by anticipating, communicating, and responding to patient and surgical team needs. Administers medications and intravenous solutions within scope of practice and applicable orders, performs lab or diagnostic testing as ordered, reports critical values to the provider, and evaluates and documents patient response and effectiveness.
