The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department has an exciting opportunity for Turf Maintenance seasonal employment positions to assist with Homewood Golf Course, city parks, and right of ways!

Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work 10-40 hours per week, between 7:00AM and 3:00PM, with a flexible schedule, August through November 2026.

Directly accountable to the Turf Maintenance Supervisor and/or Parks Maintenance Workers and adjunctly accountable to Parks and Facilities Superintendent, and the Parks and Recreation Director.

Homewood Golf Course Turf Maintenance

Individuals interested in this position will do general golf course and landscape maintenance including mowing and string trimming turf, tree trimming and chipping of debris, gardening, garbage and debris cleanup, small construction projects and other duties assigned. The primary work location is 401 East 20th Street, but work will take place throughout the City’s Parks and other City facilities as needed.

Work hours and days are flexible, typically Monday - Friday between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM (work hours include 30 minute unpaid lunch) and Saturday – Sunday 6:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Parks & Right of Way Mowing & Maintenance

Individuals interested in this position will assist in maintaining the turf in the Parks and Right of Way areas. Duties include mowing and string trimming of turf, cleaning, minor equipment maintenance, sharpening of mower blades as necessary, tree trimming and chipping of debris, gardening, general landscape maintenance, garbage and debris cleanup. Secondary duties may include small construction, playground maintenance, and other assigned duties.

The primary work location is 319 East 9th Street, but work will take place throughout the City’s Parks and other City facilities as needed. Work hours are typically scheduled Monday - Friday between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM, (work hours include 30 minute unpaid lunch) with flexibility on number of days hours per day worked as mutually agreeable.

Preference for candidates with the ability to work 40 hours per week for summer 2026.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Previous experience is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrate strong decision-making skills, initiative, dependability, organization, enthusiasm, leadership, and a desire to serve the public.
  • Be physically capable to perform work required, under various outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to take direction from superiors and be able to complete duties with or without supervision.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair work.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and other equipment used to complete varying tasks.
