Laboratory Manager

Job Purpose

Lab Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of laboratory operations, including laboratory personnel, testing, quality standards, and safety. The manager oversees personnel operations, safety procedures, and laboratory testing, ensuring accurate determination of chemical or physical characteristics of samples.

• Provide assistance to clients in explaining laboratory analysis.
• Assume responsibility for authenticity of Laboratory Certificates of Analysis.
• Receive orders from clients on submitted samples and follow up on job progress, reporting status to clients.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of sampling techniques.
• Perform testing and analysis, and other duties as assigned.
• Manage quality control of laboratory solutions and standards.
• Maintain laboratory equipment necessary to service customer requirements at the location.
• Manage and supervise employees, providing overall direction, coordination, and evaluation.
• Ensure quality controls are followed by personnel.
• Oversee and manage laboratory personnel time and attendance.
• Understand laboratory raw data sheets and oversee accurate entries into the LIMS database.
• Ensure laboratory testing is performed and reported promptly and accurately in accordance with applicable standards.
• Assist the Director of Laboratory Operations in local marketing efforts when needed.
• Read and comprehend all analysis and safety standards in English, including ASTM, UOP, IP, and other well-defined analytical standards used in the laboratory.
• Exercise procedural, safety, and quality requirements specified in the Laboratory Manual, Safety Manual, and company policies.
• Perform all other duties assigned by management.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related science preferred, or equivalent work experience; coupled with a minimum of five years of direct transferable experience working in a laboratory.
• Must have a minimum of five years of experience managing a staff.
• Excellent time management skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, while meeting different deadlines.
• Laboratory experience in the Oil, Gas, and Chemical industry preferred.
• Must be able to work with all chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products.
• Proficient in ASTM standards.
• Must be able to differentiate between colors accurately by sight.
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience preferred.
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Access preferred.
• Have a strong work history with a track record of being a responsible individual.
• Detail-oriented.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of management.
• Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment.

10%-15% travel.

This position is performed in a laboratory environment.

• Required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms; and to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or twist body to fit and/or reach.
• Must lift or move items up to 50 pounds.
• Must work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea, when such odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs).
• May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
