WHAT IS ON OFFER

AHK has an exciting opportunity for a General Inspector to join our laboratory team based in Port Allen / New Orleans, Louisiana. The General Inspector is responsible for ensuring client instructions are carried out at agreed consignment locations, acting as an independent party to verify compliance with agreed processes and inspection and supervision procedures and providing details to clients regarding the handling of their products.

Examples of some assignments may include witnessing processing of recyclable/refining materials, conducting inventory counts, witnessing vessel loadings/discharges, visual assessment of material conditions, performing active sampling of client products and preparing resulting samples for shipment as necessary for laboratory testing.

To be successful at Alfred H Knight, you will need to display the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attend inspection locations in accordance with job instructions.
  • Carry out any assignments in accordance with the clients’ instructions and industry standards.
  • Supervise loading or discharge of cargo in containers or other modes of transport.
  • Physically perform routine material sampling using standard industry recognized equipment.
  • Communicate, verify, and execute inspection requests.
  • Verify shipment quantity, weight, and quality conforms to client specifications.
  • Record and report details of inspection accurately by instructions.
  • Provide written reports that summarise all operations carried out for any given assignment using provided templates.
  • Send and receive email and phone communications for coordination and scheduling of assignments, and to communicate on status updates.
  • Collection of documents and samples as applicable.
  • Dispatch samples to Alfred H Knight North America or as instructed by the client (via UPS, Fed Ex, or DHL).
  • Ensure safety in the workplace and, in this respect, also ensure compliance with any and all instructions relating to the use and storage of material/equipment necessary for the performance of all job-related tasks.
  • Follow appropriate health and safety policies and procedures at all times, including site-specific requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Read and interpret documents such as packing lists, operating and maintenance instructions, procedures manuals, safety instructions, etc.
  • Follow directions ensuring the results are accurate and reported promptly.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite (primarily MS Word and Excel).
  • Work well with others and independently.
  • Able to lift to 50 lbs.
  • Able to routinely perform physical sampling of material.
  • Maintain a professional and independent position for all assignments.
  • Effective communication skills with onsite and office based staff.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to convey details through written reports and photographs.
  • Must be reliable and able to organise and operate independently (training will be provided).
  • Computer literate (Word, Excel, G-mail, Google Drive, etc) and good mathematical skills.
  • Positive attitude.

Required Work Experience

  • Experience in material sampling and inspection practices is preferred.
  • Experience in warehousing, port operations, logistics, processing or general hands-on tasks is desirable.
Required Qualifications
  • TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials allow access to US Ports) preferred. If working in a location where TWIC is required, candidate must be able to pass the background and security requirements).
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation to travel to assignments/worksites.

Travel / Rotation Requirements

  • Some travel may be required, including overnight stays (100 mile radius of the Port Allen location).
