Job Summary

Xavier University of Louisiana is seeking applications for a Research Scientist. The incumbent will perform experiments involving PCR , Real-time PCR , Northern and Western Blots, PCR Arrays, RNA and DNA extraction, protein expression, and purification. Ph.D. in biomedical science or biology-related discipline with a strong background in molecular and cellular biology.

Prior experience working in a core facility or as a staff scientist/postdoc is preferred, but not required.

Special Requirements Summary Work Hours

Monday – Friday, 40 Hour work week. Work limited extended or additional hours as needed in cooperation with others in the core lab to maintain cells and ongoing research activities during holidays or weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description

  • 1. Report to the Cell Molecular Biology core manager and faculty supervisor of the core.
  • 2. Develop bioassays and other experimental designs to address client needs.
  • 3. Provide clients assistance with experimental design, data analysis, presentation, and grant writing in relation to core services.
  • 4. Develop and provide training related to core services for clients (faculty, staff, students).
  • 5. Work in a team with other core staff to address multiple aspects of projects.
  • 6. Maintain and use cell cultures in bioassays and other experiments.
  • 7. Perform experiments involving PCR , Quantitative PCR , Western Blots, PCR Arrays, RNA and DNA extraction, protein expression, and purification.
  • 8. Perform receptor binding assays using commercial kits involving recombinant receptors.
  • 9. Plate and dose cells for the reporter gene, gene array, proliferation, survival, and other bioassays.
  • 10. Maintain lab environment including daily and weekly lab maintenance and cleaning as required.
  • 11. Attend and report at the core lab and/or meetings with the core manager.
  • 12. Report all activities in the lab notebook and electronic reporting system as directed.
  • 13. Perform data analysis of results as needed.
  • 14. Write or update lab protocols and methods for manuscripts as needed.
  • 15. Maintain inventory of core lab supplies and obtain quotes for supply orders that are needed.
  • 16. Learn the operation of core lab equipment, instruments, and iLab core management software as needed.
  • 17. Work limited extended or additional hours as needed in cooperation with others in the core lab to maintain cells and ongoing research activities during holidays or weekends.
  • 18. Participate in the core hurricane evacuation plan for the duration of storm events that may include participation in remote activities such as online and/or phone interactions with the core team, core clients (process core lab data), and/or work on other core lab related activities (manuscripts, grants, protocols, training).
  • 19. Comply with all division, college, and university rules and guidelines as detailed in the staff handbook.
