Location: New Orleans

The Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine at Tulane University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join a portfolio of quantitative health equity research led by Dean Thomas

A. LaVeist. The fellow will be affiliated with the Tulane Health Equity Institute
, a university-wide initiative advancing research on structural determinants of health, policy solutions, and systems-level interventions to reduce inequities.

This position is embedded within an active research program examining how health policy, health system organization, financing structures, and structural drivers—including housing, discrimination, and community-level social vulnerability—shape access to care, quality, utilization, and health outcomes. Projects include secondary analysis of large national datasets, administrative and claims data, and policy-relevant evaluations designed to inform federal and state decision-makers.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and contribute to rigorous quantitative analyses in health services and health policy research
  • Develop and execute analytic plans using large survey, administrative, or health system datasets
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of NIH and other federal grant proposals
  • Prepare manuscripts for submission to high-impact peer-reviewed journals
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across public health, medicine, and policy
  • Engage in research translation efforts aligned with the mission of the Tulane Health Equity Institute

The fellow will contribute substantively to funded and developing research projects while also pursuing an independent research agenda aligned with health equity and structural determinants of health. Structured mentorship in federal grant writing, research leadership, and academic career development will be provided.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • PhD (completed by start date) in Health Policy and Management, Health Services Research, Epidemiology, Public Health, Economics, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methods and statistical modeling
  • Experience working with large-scale survey, administrative, or health system datasets
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications related to health equity, health services research, health policy, or structural determinants of health
  • Strong scientific writing skills and demonstrated capacity to contribute to competitive grant proposals
Appointment

This is a full-time, 12-month postdoctoral appointment that can be renewed for a second year, with the possibility of a third year contingent upon performance and funding availability. Salary is commensurate with NIH postdoctoral guidelines and experience. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
