Western Eco Systems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm, is looking for a full‑time temporary Field Supervisor to manage a team of biological field technicians investigating the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at operational wind facilities throughout Iowa, starting June 2026 through October 31, 2026, with possible extension to May 2027.
Compensation
: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour, DOE Completion Bonus

- Able to work independently and in teams, communicating effectively with a crew of up to 6 technicians.
- Skilled in identifying regional birds and bats by sight, working in adverse weather, and navigating rough terrain.
- Well‑organized, electronically tracking data per standardized protocols across facilities.
- Supervise up to 6 biological field technicians surveying across multiple facilities.
- Maintain consistent communication with technicians via phone, text, and email, ensuring availability during early mornings and late evenings.
- Train and coach new technicians on gear and survey protocols.
- Search designated plots beneath wind turbines for bat and bird fatalities, collecting data on tablets to assess bias in fatality estimation; conduct additional surveys as needed.
- Create schedules of searches and bias trials at each facility.
- Assist in the identification of birds or bats; conduct bias trials and aid fatality monitoring when required.
- Review data summaries and photos daily to ensure quality data collection, providing corrections and guidance as necessary.
- Maintain and track inventory of equipment, ensuring data organization and quality per requests.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred but not required.
- Prior management experience and/or in‑field experience with regional wind projects preferred.
- Advanced experience with macro‑photography, bat and bird identification for regional species, and corresponding guides and keys required.
- Proficient use of electronics including computers, tablets, phones, GPS units, topographic maps, and compasses required.
- Organized, capable of collecting and managing tablet data, implementing quality control measures for self and technicians.
- Ability to work independently and interact professionally with project managers, coordinators, technicians, clients, and landowners.
- Reliability and punctuality; work may commence before sunrise and extend to sunset.
- Off‑road driver training will be provided, including a driving assessment.
- Applicants must be in good physical condition; surveys require walking entire shifts in extreme temperatures and weather, opening and closing gates weighing 40+ pounds.
- Must provide suitable safety‑toed footwear, binoculars, clothing, water bottles, etc.
After an offer of employment is made, candidates must successfully pass a pre‑employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria for operating a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license is required.
