JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSEThe Nuclear Chemistry Technician performs both laboratory and field-based chemistry activities that support safe, reliable nuclear plant operation. Responsibilities include field sampling of plant systems, diesel fuel, and other media; performing chemical and radiological analyses; performing chemical additions and filter changeouts of various plant systems; maintaining compliance with the site Chemical Hygiene Plan; and supporting routine and emergent chemistry needs essential to plant performance and regulatory requirements.
JOBDUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct field sampling and analysis of plant systems, including reactor water, condensate, service water, cooling systems, auxiliary systems, diesel fuel oil, and radiation monitoring systems by following established procedures for radiological and industrial safety support equipment health and regulatory compliance.
- Provide corrosion control support through proper monitoring, sampling, and data interpretation.
- Perform laboratory quality control activities including instrument operation, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Evaluate and input chemistry data into the designated data management system; perform reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to regulatory specifications.
- Maintain chemistry parameters within established limits and ensure prompt response to off-normal or out-of-specification conditions.
- Communicate promptly with chemistry management concerning issues that may affect plant chemistry, equipment performance, or regulatory compliance.
- Understand adverse chemistry impacts on plant components and support corrective actions as needed.
- Safe handling and transportation of compressed gas cylinders, liquid nitrogen dewars, and chemical totes.
- Executing hands on tasks that require lifting, transporting, and operating specialized equipment.
- Participate as assigned in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO).
- Comply with all Chemical Control Program requirements and plant procedures.
High school diploma.
B.S. Degree in chemistry or a related technical degree, Naval Nuclear Power School, Engineering Laboratory Technician School or equivalent work experience highly preferred.
Minimum experience required of the position- Chemistry Lab Technician I:
High school diploma. - Chemistry Lab Technician II: 2+ years commercial nuclear experience
- Chemistry Lab Technician III:4+ years commercial nuclear experience
- Technical understanding of nuclear generation principles and operations.
- Proficiency with current computer business applications (Microsoft Office).
- High degree of manual dexterity.
- Must be able to work a shift schedule as required and respond to plant events beyond normal hours when necessary.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and safely climb ladders and stairs.
- Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment, including a respirator.

The standard specifies this as individuals responsible for specific maintenance activities or analytical laboratory work. They are responsible for troubleshooting, performance of tests, calibration, inspections, surveys, maintenance, and repair of equipment. Technicians interpret and verify field data accumulated from tests such as radiation surveys, instrumentation systems tests, liquid and gaseous analysis, and calibration of electronic circuits.
