qualifications

  • professional engineer registration and license to practice in louisiana. Out‑of‑state registrations are acceptable, but proof must be presented during the first year of probation.
  • either permanent civil service status as an engineer or one (1) year of professional engineering experience following registration.
  • automobile requirement may apply for some positions; an automobile allowance is usually granted.
  • verification of registration/license and other credentials is required prior to start date.
  • a qualifying review of training and experience will determine fulfillment of minimum qualifications.

this is a non‑competitive original entrance and promotional examination in accordance with rule v, section 8.1 (b) of the city civil service rules.

domicile requirements

domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. However, all new full‑time employees hired into this classification on or after january 1, 2013 must be domiciled in orleans parish within 180 days of hire (airport and public safety employees are excluded). Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from residency requirements for the duration of their employment at the sewerage and water board.

background

check

the hiring department will conduct interviews of qualified individuals before requesting a criminal background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history; criminal history will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

application instructions

applications will not be accepted after the closing date or after the maximum number of applications has been received. All minimum qualification requirements must be met by the final filing date. Paper applications must be submitted on the official application form and received in the department of city civil service, 1340 poydras street, suite 900, new orleans, louisiana, before the close of business on the final filing date.

working

test period

effective august 1, 2023, the working test (probationary) period for all positions in the classified service is one year.

substance abuse testing

candidates for positions where safety is a concern will undergo pre‑employment screening. Candidates for all other original entrance positions will undergo an unannounced screening during their working test period. See civil service rule v, section 9 for details.

medical examination

a medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to active classifications and may be required for re‑employment, promotions, and/or transfers.

medical screening

all original entrance probationary appointments to non‑active classifications require medical screening, which may result in a medical examination.

good moral character

good moral character is required of all applicants. Applicants may be disqualified for unsatisfactory character or employment record, forgery, misrepresentation, or cheating on examinations.

driver licensing

applicants who are licensed to drive must bring a current license on their person for identification during all examination phases. If not present, the department may require another form of picture identification.

veterans preference

veterans, disabled veterans, certain spouses, and parents of veterans receive additional credit if claimed on the veterans preference claim form, which must be submitted with required proof (e.g., dd214) before the final filing date.

high school diploma and ged

must be issued by a state department of education or an institution recognized by that department. Credits from foreign institutions require an accepted evaluation service statement.

accredited colleges and universities

accredited institutions are those recognized by the usde. College diplomas from foreign countries are accepted if supported by an accepted evaluation service.

experience

unpaid work is not credited unless specified. Partial credit may be granted for related part‑time employment. Experience credit may be granted for related provisional appointments (internal applicants).

professional administrative experience

defined as experience gained in a position that required a bachelor’s degree upon entrance.

offers of employment or promotion

verification of education, driver’s license, and professional licenses/certifications is required prior to appointment. Misrepresentation of credentials leads to withdrawal of offers. Revised 1/91, 4/03, 7/05, 2/07, 8/10, 2/12, 8/15, 6/16, 1/17, 1/19, 2/23.
