- professional engineer registration and license to practice in louisiana. Out‑of‑state registrations are acceptable, but proof must be presented during the first year of probation.
- either permanent civil service status as an engineer or one (1) year of professional engineering experience following registration.
- automobile requirement may apply for some positions; an automobile allowance is usually granted.
- verification of registration/license and other credentials is required prior to start date.
- a qualifying review of training and experience will determine fulfillment of minimum qualifications.
this is a non‑competitive original entrance and promotional examination in accordance with rule v, section 8.1 (b) of the city civil service rules.

domicile requirementsdomicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. However, all new full‑time employees hired into this classification on or after january 1, 2013 must be domiciled in orleans parish within 180 days of hire (airport and public safety employees are excluded). Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from residency requirements for the duration of their employment at the sewerage and water board.

the hiring department will conduct interviews of qualified individuals before requesting a criminal background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history; criminal history will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

effective august 1, 2023, the working test (probationary) period for all positions in the classified service is one year.
substance abuse testingcandidates for positions where safety is a concern will undergo pre‑employment screening. Candidates for all other original entrance positions will undergo an unannounced screening during their working test period. See civil service rule v, section 9 for details.
medical examinationa medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to active classifications and may be required for re‑employment, promotions, and/or transfers.

good moral charactergood moral character is required of all applicants. Applicants may be disqualified for unsatisfactory character or employment record, forgery, misrepresentation, or cheating on examinations.

experienceunpaid work is not credited unless specified. Partial credit may be granted for related part‑time employment. Experience credit may be granted for related provisional appointments (internal applicants).
professional administrative experiencedefined as experience gained in a position that required a bachelor’s degree upon entrance.
