Corrections Captain Position

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is seeking a dedicated and highly disciplined Corrections Captain to join its leadership team. As the second-largest all-male adult correctional facility in Louisiana, EHCC houses minimum, medium, and maximum-security inmates and relies on strong, dependable leadership to maintain safety, order, and operational excellence.

Three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:
1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR 2. One year of experience in any field; OR 3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer. One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Lieutenant in the State service.

Necessary special requirements include:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse;

engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties:

The Corrections Captain serves as an assistant yard supervisor to the Corrections Major and plays a crucial role in overseeing security operations, staff performance, and inmate management. This position provides second-line supervision to a Corrections Lieutenant and leads all Master Sergeants, Corrections Sergeants, and Cadets assigned to A, B, C, or D Team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to upholding institutional policies and ensuring the safety of staff, offenders, and the public.

Position-Specific Details:

• Meet daily with the Shift Supervisor to review operational needs, security concerns, staff assignments, and institutional priorities. Ensure the Roll Call Training Topic is prepared and effectively delivered at each roll call.
• Provide direct supervision and guidance to the Corrections Lieutenant. In coordination with the Unit Manager and Colonel, conduct staff meetings to address security operations, problem areas, new directives, policy updates, staff morale, inmate morale, and any matters impacting the overall function of the unit.
• Communicate all relevant and significant information to the Major, Colonel, and Unit Manager in a timely and accurate manner.
• Remain on the assigned post until properly relieved, ensuring constant oversight and continuation of security operations.
• Properly transfer all equipment, updates, and essential information to the relieving Captain during shift change.
• Meet periodically with the Shift Major and Lieutenants to discuss operational management issues, emerging concerns, and teamwork strategies. Conduct facility rounds with shift supervisors to assess security practices and ensure compliance with institutional standards.

Compensation:
This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $32.06 per hour. This position also offers premium pay: A rate between $1.00 and $2.00 an hour for each regular hour worked, based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
