.
The University Police Lieutenant is responsible for supervising, planning, coordinating, and overseeing the activities and operations of personnel assigned to patrol, investigations, administrative functions, special assignments, and other public safety operations. This position provides direct leadership to subordinate personnel and serves as the responsible official in charge in the absence of the Associate Director of Public Safety/Deputy Chief of Police.
The Lieutenant plays an important role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the Xavier community.
Key Responsibilities:- Supervise, train, evaluate, and provide guidance to subordinate personnel.
- Direct and advise personnel in the enforcement of criminal laws, university policies, departmental procedures, and public safety regulations.
- Oversee patrol shift operations, staffing schedules, special assignments, and details.
- Respond to calls for service, critical incidents, and other campus safety concerns as appropriate.
- Ensure personnel compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Prepare, review, and submit complete, concise, and accurate reports, records, and documentation.
- Maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, visitors, the public, and outside law enforcement agencies.
- Collaborate with the Associate Director of Public Safety/Deputy Chief of Police on training activities and operational needs.
- Command and help mitigate threatening incidents or events occurring on university-owned property.
- Support compliance efforts related to campus safety, including Clery Act, Title IX, and threat assessment responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Several years of law enforcement experience, preferably in a university or campus setting.
- Must meet Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training requirements for a Special Police Commission.
- Must possess a valid state motor vehicle driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
- Must pass a comprehensive criminal background investigation.
- Must demonstrate exemplary integrity, ethical decision-making, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Experience managing a diverse workforce is highly desirable.
- Prior supervisory or command-level law enforcement experience preferred.
The ideal candidate should have knowledge of criminal law, case law, legal codes, court procedures, government regulations, juvenile procedures, due process, effective policing practices, public safety operations, and campus security issues.
Candidates should also possess strong organizational, analytical, critical-thinking, decision-making, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. The ability to remain professional, composed, and effective during stressful or hostile situations is essential.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer software programs used for reports and documentation is required.
