Utility Locator – Swyft Fiber
Position summary:
Responsible for the correct, safe, and efficient identification, location, and protection of underground network facilities. Ensures clear and complete network identification for the excavator or property owner.
- Searches for underground utilities in an area, marks the location, and completes required paperwork for the locate.
- Operates locator system (sub‑site and handheld) for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
- Ensures safety of the public and other underground utilities.
- Completes all applicable permits and locates on site.
- Adheres to safety standards, guidelines, and codes on the jobsite.
- Schedules and coordinates projects, budgeting time to meet locate ticket deadlines.
- Prepares and submits material requests to meet daily operational needs while maintaining equipment and material inventory.
- Manages budget and makes adjustments when unexpected complications arise.
- Collaborates with supervisory staff, contractors, and design professionals to resolve issues related to work procedures and construction.
- Leads actions to mitigate delays due to weather or emergencies.
- Builds relationships with owners, managers, designers, supervisors, contractors, tradespersons, and craft workers.
- Communicates with landowners to resolve easement and private property issues.
- Maintains community and official relationships.
- Attends safety meetings.
- Maintains vehicle and tools issued by the company at all times.
- 3+ years of telecommunications experience.
- 3+ years of experience using geophysical multi‑frequency locate equipment in underground utility locating.
- Safety training including electrical clearances, OSHA‑12, traffic control, bucket truck safety, and ladder safety.
- Ability to travel up to 90% of the time.
- Willingness to work long hours, overtime, and weekends as needed.
- Availability to respond to a 24/7/365 operation and emergency schedules during natural disasters and network outages.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Service orientation and customer focus.
- Sound judgment and decision making.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management abilities.
- Proficient in Google Suite or related software.
- Understanding of contracts, plans, specifications, and regulations.
- Flexibility and efficiency in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to multitask and make quick decisions under pressure.
- Understanding of engineering, architectural, and construction drawings.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds, overhead lifting of 20+ pounds, stand for long periods, work outdoors in all weather, climb elevations up to 18 feet, and work in confined spaces.
Employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Regularly stand, walk, and sit; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and focus ability.
