The Equipment Operator performs a variety of tasks, operating various types of equipment primarily related to the construction of telecommunications and a Fiber-to-the Home (FttH) Network. This position operates heavy to light excavation equipment and places and buries fiber pathways, including operation of horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment.
Responsibilities- Operate excavation equipment for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
- Prepare construction sites for building, demolition, or excavation.
- Transport tools and other construction equipment to and from construction sites.
- Responsible for avoiding existing cables and digging in accordance with blueprints and designated plans.
- Perform all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment.
- Set up and clean up the work site including traffic and pedestrian control.
- Inspect and fuel vehicle prior to beginning shift.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs.
- Read utility locates and coordinate day lighting of these facilities.
- Ensure all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site.
- Inspect the work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications.
- Operate construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Ensure sites are kept clean and safe.
- High school diploma or equivalent, and at least one (1) year experience. Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
- On-the-job training offered. Must be available to work long periods including evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit.
- Ability to use hands to handle or foot operations.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to climb and balance.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs as needed.
- Ability to maintain all safety expectations.
- Works outdoors for extended periods.
- Exposed to extreme weather conditions.
- Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
- Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
- Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.
- Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades.
- Excellent mechanical skills.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to work as a team.
- Oral communication skills.
