Position: MARINE TECHNICIAN I, II, or III
Location: Chauvin

LUMCON is a statewide academic consortium that strengthens foundational marine science to address environmental and socioeconomic challenges. With the first‑rate DeFelice Marine Center and a fleet of research vessels, LUMCON now expands its programs with a new maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.

We are accepting applications for Marine Technician I, II, or III positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in oceanography, marine science, engineering, or related discipline, and/or at least 1 year of experience as a sea‑going Marine Technician or similar position for a Marine Technician I.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a position equivalent to a Marine Technician I to qualify for a Marine Technician II.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Marine Technician II to qualify for a Marine Technician III.
IDEAL CANDIDATE / PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with standard oceanographic instrumentation, associated data acquisition, and software, including:
  • RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
  • Seabird Electronic CTDs and sensor arrays
  • Shipboard computer networks
  • NOAA’s Scientific Computer System (SCS)
  • Various over‑the‑side data acquisition packages
  • Winch monitoring systems
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provide support to vessel operations in regard to computer networks.
  • Maintain and operate shared‑use equipment and ship’s computers.
  • Troubleshoot and repair satellite‑based internet services.
  • Operate as the ship’s system administrator.
  • Provide technical assistance to scientists and other personnel.
  • Be willing and able to spend an average of 160 days per year at sea and 60 days on dockside maintenance.
  • Maintain an active TWIC card and a valid U.S. passport.
  • Be flexible to the vessel’s fluid and changing schedule.
  • Operate a small Rigid‑Hulled Inflatable (RIB) with outboard to complete scientists’ objectives.
  • Perform normal duties onboard an ocean‑going ship, including:
  • Ascend and descend ladders.
  • Lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Work aloft and in confined spaces.
  • Work odd and extended hours.
