The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. The incumbent reports directly to a Highway Foreman 1 and must be self‑motivated, able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences as required.

• Operates various types of heavy equipment.
• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance such as oil changes.
• Assists with shoveling asphalt, digging footings for concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and equipment, flagging traffic, and operating power and hand tools.
• Attends required training under the Department’s Structured Training Program.
• Obtains and maintains a CDL (required for MEO 2 and MEO 1 – Heavy) and reports revocation per the Department’s CDL Policy.
• Performs incidental repair and construction tasks such as bridge repair, drainage structure repair, guardrail installation, fencing, fender systems, and cabling at movable bridges and other structures.
• Executes any other tasks assigned by supervisor or higher‑level personnel to accomplish the Department’s transportation, maintenance, and construction mission.
• May train or assist in training lower‑level operators or laborers.
• May be required to perform emergency or disaster support activities.

No experience or training is required.

Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an MEO 1, MEO 2, or MEO 1/Heavy.

• MEO‑1: $16.06 per hour, plus a $1.00 premium pay for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase upon attaining permanent status.
• MEO‑2: $17.18 per hour, plus a $1.00 premium pay for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase upon attaining permanent status.
• MEO‑1/HEAVY: $21.05 per hour.
