Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Position Summary
Responsible for performing preventative maintenance, special tank inspections and general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal and state regulations and Company standards.
Duties and Responsibilities- The Diesel Truck Mechanic diagnoses and repairs tractors and trailers.
- Perform annual/systematic 90‑day inspections to ensure equipment meets federal FHWA standards.
- Perform inspections of cargo tanks: internal, external, and upper coupler inspections, heat system, leakage, vacuum, pressure tests and vapor tightness test (EPA Method
27). - Determine the mechanical condition of tractors, trailers and associated equipment; diagnose component malfunctions and initiate repair actions.
- Repair components by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts.
- Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling and replacing major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components, parts or systems (brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, steering, hydraulics, control linkages, clutches and traction units).
- Use technical publications or automated systems to maintain vehicles according to manufacturers’ schedules and for parts research.
- Annotate all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software.
- Operate a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and shop as needed.
- Communicate need to order and receive parts and supplies as needed.
- Adhere to all established safety (OSHA) and environmental policies and standards, including handling or disposal of hazardous wastes.
- Clean, organize and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
- Perform welding repairs as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Report directly to the Shop Supervisor.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experienced in the use of inspection and test equipment used for cargo tank inspections.
Essential Qualifications- Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles and repair relating to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently inspect tanks and trailers to align with DOT standards (49 CFRHM
180.407). - Knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance, DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures.
- Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software.
Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently.
Physical DemandsUse arms to reach and stretch; hands and fingers to grasp, move or assemble objects of a variety of sizes and to manipulate tools, devices and controls. Use legs to stand for long periods, maneuver through shop environment, perform functions that may include crawling, kneeling, crouching, sitting and carrying or relocating objects weighing up to 75lbs. Perform broad locomotor motions such as bending, twisting, balancing, reaching, and sustaining them for long periods without fatigue.
Perform fine locomotor motions with fingers. Adjust, execute, maintain and repeat all bodily motions, postures, and stances to accommodate rapid and gradual changes within the work environment. Visual acuity and auditory senses required to identify objects, sounds, speech, and distinguish details under varying lighting and sound levels. Speak clearly and at necessary volumes.
Shop may be subject to outdoor weather. Frequent exposure to loud machinery, air tool operation, hammering and engine noise. The position includes 0% travel. Ability to operate in constant alertness and safe manner. The position works in confined spaces.
