Primary Responsibilities- Install and connect pipes for chilled water, hot water, steam, and refrigerant systems
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings
- Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipe using hand and power tools
- Install valves, pumps, regulators, and control systems
- Test piping systems for leaks, pressure, and proper operation
- Repair or replace damaged or malfunctioning pipe systems
- Assist with system startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities
- Coordinate assigned work activities with Site Foreman, Project Managers, General Contractors, and other trades
- Follow building codes, safety regulations, and job specifications
- Ability to compose 3 day look ahead, material inventory, project RFI’s
- Perform equipment setting, pipe routing, soldering, pipe insulation, and mechanical system assembly
- Knowledge of purging, soldering, evacuation, refrigerant charging per industry standards
- Maintain company quality standards and ensure installations meet project requirements
- Identify and communicate field issues, conflicts, material shortages, and schedule concerns to Site Foreman
- Train and mentor Helpers in proper installation techniques and safety procedures
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized manner
- Construction sites, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and sometimes residential projects
- Physically demanding work (lifting heavy pipe, working in tight spaces, climbing ladders)
- Exposure to heat, cold, noise, and mechanical systems
- May require overtime, night work, or travel depending on project deadlines
- Knowledge of HVAC systems and piping materials (copper, steel, PVC, etc.)
- Ability to read blueprints and technical diagrams
- Pipe fitting skills: cutting, threading, brazing, soldering, welding (in some roles)
- Strong math and measurement skills
- Understanding of pressure systems and fluid dynamics basics
- OSHA safety training (often required)
- High school diploma or GED typically required
- Completion of a pipefitter or HVAC apprenticeship (4–5 years common)
- On-the-job training under licensed journeymen
- Certifications may include OSHA, EPA Section 608 (for refrigerants), and welding certifications
