Primary Responsibilities- Measure, cut, bend, and shape sheet metal using hand tools, power tools, and specialized machines (e.g., shears, brakes, rollers)
- Fabricate and assemble all phases of ductwork (Spiral, Rectangular, Double Wall, Flex and Round)
- Install HVAC duct systems and related metal components in commercial or industrial buildings
- Read and interpret blueprints, submittals and technical drawings
- Rivet, bolt, or solder metal parts as required
- Inspect finished products for accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications
- Repair or replace damaged sheet metal structures or HVAC components
- Follow safety procedures and comply with building codes and regulations
- Collaborate with Subcontractors, General Contractors, Site Foreman, and Site Personnel
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
- Estimate materials and job requirements when needed
- Layout metal parts and mark cutting/bending lines
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication and installation
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
- Knowledge of HVAC systems is often preferred
- Proficiency with hand tools and power tools used in metalwork
- Strong math and measurement skills (fractions, angles, layout work)
- Understanding of welding and fastening techniques
- Physical stamina for lifting, climbing, and working in various environments
- High school diploma or GED (typically required)
- Completion of a sheet metal apprenticeship program (usually 4–5 years) or equivalent experience
- On-the-job training is common
- Certifications (optional but beneficial), such as OSHA safety training or HVAC certifications
- Construction sites, manufacturing plants, or fabrication shops
- Exposure to noise, heat, cold, and heights
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to lift heavy materials (often 50+ lbs)
- Standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing for extended periods
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
