Job Summary
This is skilled trades work assembling, installing, maintaining, repairing, and replacing structures, equipment, finishes and accessories across all maintenance trades. This position is part of a Career Progression Group; vacancies may be filled as Maintenance Repairer 1 or 2 depending on experience.
Essential Requirements- Position is considered essential personnel and must be available to respond to campus emergencies after hours and during campus closures.
- May be assigned to the emergency team on campus or an off‑site evacuation, and may be placed on an on‑call rotation.
- Must have a current driver’s license.
- Knowledge of general maintenance trades techniques, methods and procedures.
- Skill in performing general maintenance trades functions.
- Ability to complete general maintenance trades duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to direct employees to perform assigned tasks.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools and equipment properly.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to carry, erect, climb, and maneuver on ladders and/or scaffolds; work in tight and awkward spaces; work off of roofs, cat walks, and other elevated areas.
- Ability to carry or otherwise move loads of 50 pounds or more (pipe, wire, toolboxes, etc.).
- Ability to understand and apply university rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges.
- Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work area to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries or damage.
- Ability to communicate information effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Installs, maintains, alters, repairs and removes simple electrical fixtures, interior light fixtures, light machinery, electrical outlets and switches.
- Installs, maintains, alters and repairs plumbing fixtures, toilets, unclogs sink/toilet/tub drains.
- Performs preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Performs demolition and construction work on minor projects throughout the campus.
- Adheres to all federal, state, local, campus, and department safety regulations during duties, including special events work and campus maintenance emergencies.
- Assists other trades (plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, carpenters, sign shop, and painters) when needed.
- Employees must pass a qualification process to be promoted to Maintenance Repairer 2.
- Maintenance Repairer 1: minimum 1 year of related experience;
Maintenance Repairer 2: minimum 2 years of experience. - Two years of experience or training in building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant; or
- Completion of a two‑year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering; or
- Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses.
- Valid Louisiana driver’s license.
- Selected applicant will be on probation for at least 6 months.
- Pre‑employment drug testing, physical and criminal background check required.
- Confidence in performing tasks requiring physical exertion, including carrying loads of 50 pounds or more and working on ladders or scaffolds.
Starting rate is $17.18 for Maintenance Repairer 1 and $19.67 for Maintenance Repairer 2, with an additional $1 longevity pay for hours worked. Rate may be increased based on qualifications.
