Carpenter Foreman

This is a full-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA.

The carpenter foreman is responsible for the supervision and oversight of scheduling, reviewing, installing, repairing, and maintaining all carpentry tasks as related to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM) system including the following:
Cabildo, Creole House, Jackson House, Arsenal, Presbytere, Madame John's Legacy, Collection Facility, Lower Pontalba including all commercial and residential spaces, 1850 House, and the old U.S. Mint all located in New Orleans. Also included are: E.D. White House in Thibodaux, Wedell-Williams Aviation and Cypress Sawmill Museum in Patterson, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Regional History Museum in Natchitoches, and the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana State Museum's collections and educational programs stimulate awareness and appreciation of our state's rich and diverse history and culture.

Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Four years of experience or training in the carpentry trade.

Job Duties:

  • Review, evaluate, and prioritize incoming work orders on a daily basis.
  • Participate, assign, inspect, and supervise all repairs, alterations/renovations, installations, and maintenance of all carpentry (wood) related tasks necessary to maintain the buildings in the Louisiana State Museum system.
  • Determines tools and equipment needed to accomplish successful completion of job/project.
  • Assists in determining costs of material, construction needs, and scheduling of timeline related to job/project.
  • Assists the Facility Maintenance Manager and/or Assistant Facility Maintenance Manager with oversight and supervision of Laborers and Trade Helpers as needed per job/project specification, requirement, and timeline.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints corresponding to projects/jobs.
  • Supervises and assigns duties to 3 Master Carpenters who perform journeyman level carpentry work.
  • Evaluates work performance, completes planning and review with subordinates in accordance with CPM requirements.
  • Authorizes leave and keeps subordinates apprised of changes/additions to agency policies and procedures.
  • Advises Assistant and/or Facility Maintenance Manager of any preventative maintenance or repairs, including any emergency repairs, needed throughout the LSM system.
  • Advises Assistant and/or Facility Maintenance Manager of any supplies/equipment needed for inventory stock, special projects, and jobs.
  • Assists facility maintaining of the LSM preventative maintenance and safety programs.
  • Consults with Curatorial staff in designing, fabricating, and installing upcoming exhibits, casework, etc.
  • Completes all other duties as determined by supervisor.

Position-Specific Details:

  • Location: This position is based primarily in New Orleans, LA. Travel may be required to other LSM locations across the state.
  • Appointment Type: This position may be filled as probational, promotion, or detail to special duty. Current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
  • Work Schedule: This is a full-time position that reports in-office for an average of 40 hours/week. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime. This position may be required to travel.
  • Compensation: Compensation offered will be dependent on level of experience and/or certification, so please be sure to include all education and work experience for consideration.
