A Carpenter’s Helper is an entry-level role in the construction industry that provides direct support to skilled carpenters, enabling them to focus on more complex tasks while the helper handles preparatory, material-handling, and basic construction work.
Role Overview
The Carpenter’s Helper assists in the design, construction, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures made from wood, plywood, and wallboard. They work under the direct supervision of experienced carpenters, contributing to project timelines and quality standards
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Material Handling: Carry, load, unload, and organize lumber, plywood, trim, fasteners, and other building materials Job Description.org+1.
- Tool Preparation: Hold and supply tools, nails, glue, or bolts; set up saw stations and other equipment
- Basic Carpentry Tasks: Measure, cut, and shape wood or other materials under supervision; assist with assembly/disassembly of temporary structures like scaffolding and barricades Interview Prep+1.
- Installation Support: Help install windows, doors, trim, cabinetry, and other components .
- Site Preparation & Clean-up: Stage materials, sweep work areas, remove debris, and maintain a safe, organized environment .
- Power Tool Use: Operate saws, drills, and other hand/power tools when trained and directed.
- Demolition & Salvage: Assist in demolition tasks, using prying bars and other tools to salvage usable materials.
- Tool Maintenance: Clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure they remain in good working order .
Skills and Qualifications
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift heavy loads and work in varied conditions (indoor/outdoor).
- Basic Carpentry Knowledge: Understanding of measuring, cutting, and joining materials is preferred.
- Attention to Detail: Ensures materials fit and work areas remain hazard-free
- Safety Awareness: Follows OSHA and site-specific safety protocols Job Description.org.
- Teamwork: Works well with carpenters and other tradespeople to keep projects on schedule.
Typical Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED .
- Experience: Entry-level; prior helper experience is a plus.
- Certifications: OSHA 10 Construction, First Aid/CPR are common requirements
