DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION
Residence and Gate Monitors are non-sworn civilian members of the university police department. The mission of the police department is to provide a safe, secure and healthy living environment for students that enhance learning and development through community service, quality programming and academic support.
Residential Life creates a living and learning environment providing programs and services that empower students to realize their potential in mind, body and spirit within a community that honors human diversity and accepts students as individuals; each with rights and responsibilities.
SUMMARY
The Residence Hall Monitor (RSM) position consists of working an 8 hour information desk in the residence halls under the supervision of the Dillard University Police Department. The Residence Hall Monitor is charged with ensuring the safety of all residents of a designated hall or apartment area by monitoring and controlling the flow of residents, visitors, staff and guests in and out of the residence halls.
The RSM is responsible for making sure all rules and regulations are followed and assisting with fire drills and investigating false alarms. The RSM must maintain a good working relationship with the Office of Residential Life and student staff members. General work responsibilities include answering the phone, submitting work order requests and performing other customer service duties.
The Gate Monitor position consist of working 8 hours at the campus main entry gate to check ’s of persons attempting to enter the campus after 7:00pm. If he/she is not a current Dillard faculty, staff or student they will not be granted access. The gate monitor is charged with ensuring the safety of the campus by monitoring and controlling the flow of traffic coming onto campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain security by becoming familiar with facility, surroundings and DU residents and guests
- Secures all exterior and emergency doors
- Read and become familiar with the administrative procedures and resources contained in the Employee Handbook, Staff Manual and the Student Handbook
- Understand and enforce all University and Residence Life policies in a fair and consistent manner (i.e., visitation, smoking, quiet hours, etc.)
- Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policy and procedures
- Reports concerns to the Residence Life Coordinator (i.e., maintenance, false alarms, security, facility damages, etc.)
- Documents any incident on the appropriate forms within 24 hours of occurrence
- Completes reports by recording observations, information and occurrences
- Submits all incident reports in a timely manner
- Maintains contact with Campus Police in case of an emergency
- Maintains organization’s stability and reputation by complying with legal requirements
- Attend department meetings and in-services held by supervisor
- Attend regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with supervisor
- Complete timesheets accurately and timely
- Serve as resource and referral agent
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must communicate effectively with people from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds
- Must be able to work without constant supervision, make decisions, and have good judgment while performing under stress
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects and prioritize based on department needs.
- Must possess the ability to operate appropriate computer functions
- Must have the ability to keep concise and accurate records and carry out verbal instructions
- Must have the ability to write complete and concise reports
- Must maintain emotional stability and physical condition necessary to perform related duties
- Must maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Must have a high level of professional appearance
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience at institutions of higher learning desired.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Law enforcement or security training preferred, but not required
- CPR and first aid certification preferred, but not required
- Must have and maintain a clean criminal record
- Flexible schedule and weekend hours included
