About This Job

The Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) performs functions of the state relative to the examination and licensing of operators of motor vehicles, the suspension and revocation of such licenses, issuance of vehicle title and registration certificates, license plates for all motor vehicles operated upon the highways of the state, recordation of liens against vehicles, and the collection of sales/use tax and other appropriate fees, all in accordance with applicable laws.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent plus four years of experience or training in any field.

Experience Substitution

Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Necessary Special Requirement

May be required to possess a current Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.

Job Duties

Job Duties and Other Information

Serves as a Motor Vehicle supervisor and, as such, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of subordinates engaged in the application and enforcement of motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.

Prepares and submits, to the Office Manager, all reports of time and attendance records and helps maintain personnel records, time sheets, and inventory reports.

Compiles and prepares daily, weekly, and monthly production counts, which are used to determine the performance and training needs of subordinate employees.

Oversees the training of employees. Helps develop and implement training procedures.

Reviews all documents submitted for title transactions and makes sure all necessary documentation is present. Determines the type of license plate required for the motor vehicle based on the vehicle type and its’ intended use and determines assessment of fees for international reciprocity agreements on vehicle license and on the sales taxes due on licensing transactions for vehicles newly registered in Louisiana.

Interviews and determines the eligibility of applicants for driver’s license and the restrictions, if any, to be placed on the license. Reviews documentation and performs all testing requirements for the issuance of a driver’s license. This includes administering road test to determine the driving skills of the applicant.

Participates in the interview of prospective applicants for employment. Incumbent performs the work of a Motor Vehicle Compliance Analyst 3 in cases presenting problems of licensing or vehicle registration because of the complexity of the transaction or the difficulty of understanding by the applicant. Incumbent prepares daily accounting reports and provides instruction to subordinate employees on the instruction and processing of such reports.

Incumbent performs all the duties of the Motor Vehicle Office Manager A/B, during her absence.

Position-Specific Details

Appointment Type: This vacancy will be filled by promotion of a current permanent status DPS-Office of Motor Vehicles employee.

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

Compensation: This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour.
