Position: Library Technician I

The Louisville Public Library seeks a warm, enthusiastic, customer service orientated, and technologically savvy individual to work in our busy library. Under the general direction of the Supervising Librarian-Adult Services, this position performs paraprofessional librarian support duties on a scheduled and on-call basis. This position will be scheduled on the adult, children’s, teen, and the circulation desk. This position provides assistance with reference, readers' advisory, instruction, and programming support.

Performs other work as required. Schedule includes evenings and rotating weekend hours. This position will be scheduled for 12-15 hours per week, based on the needs of the library.

  • Staff public desks in Adult, Children’s, Teen, and Circulation divisions.
  • Warmly greet and authentically welcome patrons by suggesting and locating information and resources that meet our community’s needs.
  • Provide instructional assistance in the use of library-supported technologies and resources, including basic instruction in using new and emerging devices and digital resources.
  • Create and maintain fun and visually appealing displays for library users.
  • Checks in materials, processes holds, and prepares and edits patron accounts.
  • Assume responsibility for department when working alone.
  • May assist with planning and implementation of programs and large-scale library events.
  • Performs other duties as required to provide excellent customer service and to ensure smooth operation of Public Services.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND

EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree, Library Technician Certificate, Library Technician Associate’s Degree, or degree/certificate in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in a public library, bookstore, or other customer focused business.
  • A combination of relevant experience and education will be considered.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to regularly move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
