At Network for Hope (NFH), the Payroll Staff Accountant
is responsible for overseeing the payroll functions of the organization, ensuring payroll is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations. The position is also responsible for monthly reconciliation of benefits and journal entries, as well as oversight of the time and attendance system for the organization in conjunction with Human Resources.
- Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
- Prepares and sends monthly payroll reports to department managers.
- Trains new employees on the timecard/payroll system and expense report system.
- Responds to payroll inquiries from employees and managers.
- Reviews and processes monthly expense reports and prepares monthly journal entries for expense reports.
- Responds to expense report inquiries from employees.
- Reviews monthly benefit bills and prepares monthly benefit journal entries and reconciliations.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage and hour laws and best practices.
- Assists in the development of work instructions specific to this role.
- Prepares and reviews documents for annual workers' compensation audits.
- Prepares and records deposits sent to the corporate office.
- Researches and establishes workers' compensation requirements for new states and localities, as necessary.
- Researches and establishes payroll tax requirements for new states and localities, as necessary.
- Assists with annual 401(k) audits, annual 990 filing, and other required annual compliance activities.
- Performs other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time, often on short notice, by the Accounting Manager, Controller, or EVP and Chief Financial Officer.
Education: Minimum of associate degree required. Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or related field preferred.
Experience: 3-5 years of payroll, accounting, or related experience required. 7 years of related experience preferred. Experience with electronic payroll processing, including multi-state processing, and strong understanding of wage and hour laws required. Experience with time and attendance software preferred. Experience with computerized accounting and data systems preferred. Strong computer skills with intermediate to advanced Excel skills. Knowledge of accounting software and MS Office.
Highly detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and consistency in work.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: CPA license or intent to pursue CPA license is preferred.
