Churchill Downs Racetrack ("CDRT"), the world’s most legendary racetrack, has been the home of The Kentucky Derby, the longest continually held annual sporting event in the United States, since 1875. Located in Louisville, CDRT features a series of themed race days during Derby Week, including the Kentucky Oaks, and conducts Thoroughbred horse racing during three race meets in the Spring, September and Fall.

CDRT is located on 175 acres and has a one‑mile dirt track, a 7/8‑mile turf track, a stabling area, and provides seating for approximately 60,000 guests. The stable area has barns sufficient to accommodate 1,400 horses and a 114‑room dormitory for back‑stretch personnel. CDRT also has a year‑round simulcast wagering facility.

Job Summary

The Assistant Horsemen’s Bookkeeper will provide service to horse owners and trainers by assisting the Horsemen’s Bookkeeper. This position maintains the horsemen’s accounting system by processing race results and updating the information for the Horsemen. The role requires general accounting and computer skills; knowledge of the horse racing industry is not required but a plus. The position involves direct interaction with owners, trainers, and jockeys and must have excellent verbal communication skills and a customer‑service focus.

The role is seasonal, working the Churchill Downs racing schedule (Wednesdays through Sundays when live racing). If willing to travel, the position may include other CDI owned racetracks such as Ellis Park and Turfway.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create, modify, and maintain horsemen's account information such as name, address, bank information and tax identification numbers.
  • Input race results using the InCompass software.
  • Process horsemen's deposits and check requests in a timely manner.
  • Respond to phone, e‑mail, and in‑person inquiries from the horsemen in a timely manner.
  • Collect outstanding race fees and assist with reconciling Triple Crown nominations.
  • Communicate with racing officials to ensure sufficient funds on account for claiming.
  • Process orders from the track photographer.
  • File daily transactions for record keeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Detail oriented, professional demeanor, strong organization and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with horsemen, trainers and jockeys.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to cultivate working relationships throughout the racing office.
  • Strong ethics and compliance mindset.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years administrative and accounting experience.
  • InCompass software experience preferred.
  • Good general knowledge of the thoroughbred horse racing industry.
  • Spanish speaking is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Kentucky Racing License.
