Position: Unit Leader for Summer Camp

Locations:
Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula, OH and/or Camp Timberlane in Wakeman, OH

Summer Camp Dates (including staff training days):
June 3 - August 11, 2026

The Unit Leader at Girl Scout Summer Camp plays a central role in guiding the camp experience, creating an inspiring and safe space where girls can explore, connect, and grow. In collaboration with the Program Director and dedicated program staff, the Unit Leader oversees the planning, organization, and implementation of enriching activities that meets the standards of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO), the American Camp Association (ACA).

Leading a team of Unit Counselors, this role provides mentorship, manages unit logistics, and ensures all campers have access to engaging, high-quality programming. As a key leader and role model, the Unit Leader helps campers embrace new challenges, form meaningful friendships, and build lasting memories. This role requires a proactive, compassionate leader who can navigate diverse situations with skill and positivity, ensuring each camper’s summer is not only safe but truly transformative.

Requirements

MAJOR

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Together with Unit Counselors, program staff, and campers, plan and execute the programs for campers
  • Supervises unit staff in appropriate actions for the health and safety of campers
  • Responsible for the welfare, safety, and cleanliness of each individual and camper in the unit
  • Observes camper’s health and reports any concerns to the Health Care Provider
  • Informs Assistant Camp Director of any camper or staff problems
  • With the help of Unit Counselors, fills out weekly paperwork and turns it into the Assistant Camp Director
  • Assist campers and staff who may need help fitting into the camp setting
  • Ensures good morale by monitoring staff
  • Assist each child with daily living tasks in living units as needed
  • Conducts initial and end-of-season inventory; store equipment for safety
  • Ensures that duties are performed by Unit Counselors and campers
  • Reports all incidents/accidents to the supervisor immediately
  • Responsible for completing and returning all records to the supervisor
  • Maintain GSUSA, GSNEO, and ACA standards at all times
  • Responsible for the welfare, safety, and cleanliness of each individual and camper in the unit follows and enforces all recommended health guidelines, including handwashing and cleaning/sanitizing as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the successful implementation of GSNEO’s goals and objectives.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a camp setting
  • Able to supervise staff and campers
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people, including external customers
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and emergency procedures
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary
  • Well-disciplined, able to meet deadlines and be a self-starter
  • Able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred
  • Ability to meet schedule requirements, including flexible work week, early hours, nights, and weekends
  • Will require travel throughout the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio jurisdiction
