Join Our Team as a Project Designer!

The Project Designer is responsible for planning, designing, and facilitating the execution of new building projects, renovations, and expansions in alignment with client goals, budget, and schedule. Working under the supervision of the Project Architect and Team Project Leader, this role develops creative design solutions, produces high-quality construction documents, coordinates consultants and engineering disciplines, and supports projects through construction.

The Project Designer plays a key role in maintaining Abel Construction’s standards of professionalism, quality, and profitability while delivering thoughtful, constructible, and code-compliant design solutions.

What You'll Do Professional Representation

· Present self, team, and Abel Construction Company in a professional and respectful manner at all times.

· Maintain clear, effective communication with clients, internal team members, consultants, contractors, vendors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).

Design & Documentation

· Develop creative conceptual, schematic, and design development solutions.

· Assist in producing drawings and documentation for all phases of design under the supervision of the Project Architect and/or Team Project Leader.

· Prepare complete construction documents and associated specifications.

· Coordinate drawing sets and project information in a clear, logical format to ensure constructability and ease of construction layout.

· Produce construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD.

· Prepare presentation packages for client meetings.

· Create renderings, graphic materials, and supplemental design documentation as required.

· Prepare freehand sketches and field markups as needed on site.

Coordination & Technical Integration

· Integrate civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, interior, landscape, and specialty systems into the overall project design.

· Research and implement applicable building codes and regulatory requirements for each project.

· Coordinate drawings and specifications to maintain clarity, completeness, and compliance.

· Contribute to delivering profitable, high-quality design projects on time and within budget.

Construction Administration & Field Support

· Travel to project sites to observe existing conditions and construction progress.

· Prepare field reports documenting site observations.

· Review construction drawings and support quality control efforts.

· Maintain organized documentation including meeting minutes, field reports, and record drawings.

· Support post-contract services including record drawing coordination and documentation updates.

Research & Continuing Education

· Research building materials, construction methods, costs, and emerging technologies.

· Stay informed on sustainable practices, innovative systems, and industry trends.

· Participate in structured continuing education to maintain and expand professional knowledge.

Location:

This position requires the candidate to work on-site in the Louisville, KY area. What We're Looking For
  • Licensed Architect preferred, not required.
  • Architecturally related degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred, Associate's degree considered with relevant commercial experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience creating construction documents in the commercial construction industry preferred
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD required
  • NCARB AXP hour reporting will be required
  • Thorough knowledge of building materials, construction methods, and applicable codes
