Youth Counselor (Educational Talent Search-ETS)

This job reports to the Executive Director

This is a Full-Time position working 1st Shift

Salary Range: $42,000-$47,500

Overview

Regional not-for-profit which provides college access and college success services such as financial aid application assistance, career counseling and assessment, postsecondary program selection and scholarship search assistance has an opening for a Youth Counselor for a U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant that serves youth in seven Jefferson County public schools. Job duties include developing and conducting workshops and information sessions relating to the importance of academic rigor, awareness of postsecondary program offerings, completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), financial literacy, coordinating mentoring and tutoring services, and preparation for college entrance tests and various topics of personal development.

The Youth Counselor is required to attend conferences and associated professional development meetings and events. The Youth Counselor works 12 months a year (including summers) and has an annual salary range of $42,000 – $47,500 depending on experience.

Job Skills /Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required in counseling, higher education, student personnel, social work or related field.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills and experience.
  • Direct experience working with low income populations preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in financial aid and career counseling preferred.
  • Experience working in secondary school systems.
  • Understanding of characteristics and challenges of first generation college attendees a plus.
  • Strong organizational, planning and presentation skills required.
  • Knowledge of mobile phone, office and computer equipment, and social media functionality required.
  • Knowledge/Experience with TRIO Programs a plus.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and ability to work productively in a team setting as well as individually.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must have a reliable personal vehicle and automobile liability insurance to fulfill duties of the Youth Counselor position.
