I. SummaryThe role of a Lead Electrical Engineer is to apply their education, skill and expertise to fulfill the design and engineering requirements of a project. They possess their Professional Engineer (PE) certification and are responsible for developing technical deliverables while leading teams of other engineers, associates and/or designers. They communicate directly with clients as the lead for the electrical scope of the project and their responsibilities include assisting with planning, conducting and evaluating approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost‑effective fashion.
II.Duties & Responsibilities General
- Perform engineering tasks individually and with a team of other designers and engineers to produce technical deliverables.
- Comprehend design principals within discipline and possess a basic understanding of other MEP discipline principals.
- Effectively delegate work to others.
- Create, organize and plot construction document deliverables for issuance to the field.
- Read and understand construction documents including site plans, floor plans, sections, details and schedules.
- Apply engineering principals for multiple project types and clients from inception to closeout.
- Review submittals and answer questions from the field.
- Competently communicate with clients verbally and in written form.
- Perform detailed surveys.
- Actively participate in company training.
- Actively learn and grow technical knowledge and soft skills.
- Competently lead, supervise, and effectively delegate to individuals or project teams of designers or engineers.
- Take on responsibility and ownership of the work of others who report to them.
- Actively teach and mentor others.
- Competently communicate with clients as the lead for their discipline on a project.
- Take on leadership roles within the company and their department.
- Possess a higher level of Revit proficiency including family modifications, schedule manipulation, parameter manipulation, creating software development plans, etc.
- Assist in the preparation of time and effort estimates for project proformas.
- Engineer the following systems: power distribution, lighting, lighting controls, equipment connections, fire alarm, grounding, emergency generator systems, and life safety systems.
- Perform the following calculations: load diversification, fault current and voltage drop.
- Understand and apply relevant aspects of building, electrical and energy codes.
- Perform branch circuiting and panel schedule calculations.
- Perform device layouts for power, lighting and fire alarm systems.
- Coordinate scope and connections with other trades.
- Perform lighting calculations and manipulate to obtain a required light level.
- Perform lighting energy compliance calculations and document results.
- Edit master specifications to be job specific.
- Engineer more complex systems to a higher level of detail.
- Engineer the following systems: lightning protection, surge protective devices (SPDs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and medium voltage distribution.
- Perform advanced calculations such as load shedding, derating, custom feeder sizing, etc.
- Possess a detailed understanding of applicable electrical codes and standards including the National Electrical Code (NEC), building codes, NFPA standards, etc.
- Research and prepare feasibility studies, life cycle analysis and other similar reports.
- Make recommendations and design changes based on selective coordination studies.
- Edit master specifications to be job specific, infilling new sections where required.
- Design detailed lighting control schemes including daylight controls, networked systems, digital controls, etc. in compliance with energy code requirements.
- Perform complex electrical distribution analysis that may include custom feeder sizing, multiple service configurations, site utility layouts, etc.
- Perform and document code research.
- Design general lighting control schemes including switching, dimming, occupancy sensors, etc. in compliance with energy code requirements.
- Coordinate with local utilities and integrate requirements into design.
- Review deliverables and find errors in layout or calculations.
- Perform basic opinion of cost.
- Read and understand selective coordination studies.
- Competently communicates with clients on large, complex projects as the lead for engineering.
- Review and signoff on the quality, code compliance and completeness of other’s work.
- Review and mitigate the most complex of change orders and confrontational owner/architect meetings.
- Write technical reports and articles that may be published.
- Speak publicly at conferences and local user groups.
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) from an accredited four‑year university or equivalent experience required.
- Basic computing skills and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
