Position: Geotechnical Engineer (EIT or PE)

CTL Engineering is hiring a Geotechnical Engineer (EIT or PE)! CTL Engineering is an award‑winning, full service consulting engineering firm with 15 locations across OH, IN, WV, KY, NC, SC, and VA with a rich history of 99 years in business. We provide civil/site design and land surveying, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration & inspection, accident reconstruction, roofing/building envelope, A/V system design, troubleshooting & installation, transportation design (bridge/roadway), and specialized testing services to the construction industry.

We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer (EIT or PE) who will play a key role in performing geotechnical explorations and investigations for our clients. You’ll leverage your expertise and creative problem‑solving skills while collaborating closely with institutions/municipal agencies, Architects, Engineers, Developers, and project teams to deliver customized geotechnical studies, reports, and solutions. From initial concept development to final execution, this role will guide projects through every stage of the land profile evaluation process, ensuring seamless integration and optimal results.

Highlights
  • Interesting projects ranging from infrastructure, industrial, commercial, and one‑off/unique engineering.
  • Projects are located in north‑central Kentucky/southern Indiana – generally within a 60‑90 mile radius of the Shelbyville/east Louisville office.
  • This role will be at least 30‑40% in the field, so some overnight travel (a couple of nights a month) is very normal/to be expected.
  • A company vehicle can be provided or reimbursement for personal vehicle use.
  • This role will be based out of our Shelbyville (east Louisville) office.
Responsibilities
  • Perform geotechnical explorations, site characterizations, and risk evaluation on developments.
  • Train and supervise lab technicians (based on experience), maintain quality reviews and certifications, manage equipment inventory and calibration, and assist with client marketing and proposal preparation.
  • Work independently on broad projects with oversight from the Service Line Manager.
  • Provide direction on a project‑to‑project basis – preparing lab testing assignments, reviewing documents, and testing results for content and accuracy.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports.
  • Review soils laboratory test results.
  • Assist in planning and execution of subsurface investigation programs, including understanding project design plans, locating test borings at project sites, and coordinating underground utility clearance.
  • Monitor and enforce quality control standards and specifications.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to read design drawings.
  • Ability to meet schedules.
  • Experience with common geotechnical software or ability to use software with minimal training.
  • Self‑motivated, reliable, quality‑minded, and detail oriented.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 0‑4+ years of experience in consulting engineering on various civil projects. New grads are encouraged to apply.
  • EIT credentialing is a strong plus, but the ability to obtain EIT and PE is required (must have an ABET‑accredited degree).
Education
  • BS Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology is a plus, but not required.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to travel, and be physically able to maneuver on open terrain.
