OverviewThis position is responsible for supporting procedures, programs, standards, compliance requirements and projects designed to optimize LG&E and KU substation maintenance and capital asset replacement and upgrade investment programs. The incumbent reviews substation asset test reports, performs analytics of historical maintenance data, drives prioritization of capital projects, supports field maintenance personnel on non‑routine technical issues, completes incident investigation reports, and inspects non‑routine work of contract crews.
The role also supports routine and emergency after‑hours calls in operations as requested by the Manager, Engineering, System Engineering.
This position is located in Louisville or Lexington, KY.
Experience LevelThe position will be filled based on the candidate's experience level:
Engineer I, II, III or Principal.
- Develop and maintain expertise in major substation equipment, including testing interpretation, replacement recommendations, and equipment issue resolution support.
- Identify and implement substation asset maintenance and capital replacement strategies, including the development of guidelines and procedures, and utilize software tools such as PowerBI to analyze record data.
- Perform root cause analysis and incident investigations for significant substation and failure events and make follow‑up recommendations.
- Support or lead renewal and asset optimization strategies for substation assets, including capital replacement recommendations for equipment with high failure rates or near end of life.
- Support best practices and consistent utilization of Cascade Maintenance Management and Asset Database software within the Transmission organization.
- Coordinate substation asset specification, procurement, order management and commissioning support in conjunction with Central Engineering.
- Provide engineering support for NERC and SERC compliance, documenting procedures related to PRC-006, PRC-006-SEC-001, PRC-005, and FAC-008.
- Manage assigned repair and construction projects, ensuring safe and efficient completion and adherence to safety policies.
- Research and provide data for PSC, AEGIS, SERC, FERC Form 1 and related audits.
- Participate in industry conferences and forums, including Doble, SEE, and DNV-GL.
- Provide customer inquiry support for key accounts served directly from KU and LG&E substations.
- Serve as a subject‑matter expert for substation asset online monitoring technologies.
- Support the Safety Core Team and other safety duties as assigned.
- Support NATF RESTORE and EEI STEP transformer spare program participation.
- Contribute to SF‑6 gas quarterly and annual reporting process.
- Support or lead monthly D-Sub reliability updates and track D-Sub SAIDI/SAIFI trends to drive capital prioritizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with corporate policies and standards.
Bachelor’s Degree (ABET accredited) in electrical engineering, related engineering, or engineering technology.
Required ExperienceAbility to analyze and solve engineering problems from a business perspective.
Preferred QualificationsComprehensive knowledge of electrical substation, power plant or industrial operations, maintenance, asset management and testing procedures. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Oracle/SAP, Cascade, Powerbase, Doble DTA, SQL, PowerBI, DNP 3.0, SEL relay and RTU communications, DrawDT, and related corporate information systems.
