SFCS is seeking a Plumbing / Fire Protection Designer to join our Louisville, Kentucky office. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and planners in a multidisciplinary environment while designing plumbing and fire protection systems for a variety of impactful projects. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced, mid-level, plumbing and fire protection design professional who enjoys developing practical, code-compliant building systems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering innovative design solutions from concept through construction.
The ideal candidate demonstrates sound technical judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Systems, Construction Technology, or a related discipline preferred.
- Experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, healthcare, senior living, education, government, or other institutional facilities.
- Strong knowledge of national plumbing codes, building codes, and applicable NFPA standards.
- Experience performing plumbing and fire protection system layouts, hydraulic calculations, piping sizing, and equipment selection.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit (Revit preferred).
- Experience with HydraCAD and HydraCALC is preferred.
- ASPE Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD or CPDT) certification preferred, or the ability and desire to obtain certification within one year of employment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and/or LEED accreditation is a plus.
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and project coordination skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to provide guidance and support to early career design professionals.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically in support of project meetings, client engagements, site visits, and collaboration across SFCS offices.
- Design and coordinate plumbing and fire protection systems for new construction, renovation, and adaptive reuse projects.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, clients, and consultants to develop practical, efficient, and code-compliant system designs.
- Participate in project planning, system selection, feasibility studies, and preliminary cost estimating.
- Perform field investigations and evaluate existing plumbing and fire protection systems for renovation and reuse opportunities.
- Prepare plumbing and fire protection system layouts, hydraulic calculations, piping sizing, equipment selection, and technical documentation.
- Develop design development and construction documents utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit.
- Prepare technical specifications and engineering documentation to support project design and construction.
- Coordinate plumbing and fire protection systems with mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and architectural disciplines.
- Participate in construction administration activities, including shop drawing review, responses to RFIs, site observations, evaluation of proposed changes, and contractor coordination.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable plumbing codes, building codes, NFPA standards, and project-specific requirements.
- Provide guidance and technical support to early career design professionals while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
