About ATS Industrial Automation

With 20+ years of experience bringing automation to nuclear projects, ATS Industrial Automation is expanding the capabilities of its nuclear division into the US. ATS provides world-leading automation tooling to the nuclear energy sector for new reactor builds, refurbishment, operations and maintenance.

About the Role

As an Intermediate Systems Design Engineer – Nuclear, you will contribute to the design and delivery of complex, high-reliability engineered systems for advanced nuclear and regulated industrial applications. You will translate customer and regulatory requirements into robust system designs and participate in the full system lifecycle—from concept development through detailed design, integration, testing, and commissioning. This role supports the development of a deep understanding of customer processes and technology while emphasizing safety, quality, and performance.

This position offers an opportunity to grow technical depth and systems thinking in a collaborative environment, with mentorship from experienced engineers and increasing ownership of system requirements, risk mitigation, and verification activities.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Develop and verify system requirements
: assist in documentation and maintenance of system-level requirements (functional, technical, regulatory); support flow-down to subsystems and third-party equipment; participate in verification planning and execution; assist with acceptance testing (POF, FAT, SAT); evaluate design outputs for conformance; prepare technical documentation such as verification matrices, test plans, and test reports; aid in identifying and mitigating technical risks.
  • Perform analysis and risk assessment support
: develop understanding of customer processes, system functionality, and applicable nuclear/industrial standards; support calculations related to functional capability, accuracy, structural considerations, pressure/flow, heat transfer, and reliability; assist with technical studies and design assessments; contribute to risk assessments (FMEAs, Safety Risk Assessments); participate in proof-of-principle studies and hands-on testing; become familiar with relevant codes, standards, quality requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Collaborate across disciplines
: work with mechanical, electrical, controls, software, assembly, and project management teams; participate in design reviews; review third-party equipment specifications and participate in acceptance testing; assist with system integration, startup, commissioning, and site support as needed; communicate technical information clearly within the project team and with customers.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related engineering discipline; exposure to systems engineering principles, design methodology, analysis, and verification is preferred.

Experience:

  • Early career experience (internship, co-op, or entry-level) supporting mechanical, electrical, controls, or systems engineering activities.
  • Fundamental understanding of engineering design, analysis, and structured problem solving methodologies.
  • Exposure to requirements definition, technical documentation, or verification/validation activities is an asset.
  • Ability to support basic engineering calculations, analyses, and studies under guidance (functional performance, accuracy, structural considerations, or process capability).
  • Familiarity with interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Hands-on interest or experience in testing, prototyping, proof-of-principle activities, or system integration support is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools for technical documentation and communication.

Nuclear-Related Knowledge

  • Interest in developing expertise in nuclear, regulated, or safety-critical systems and environments.
  • Willingness to learn and work within applicable codes, standards, quality programs, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to support work in controlled or regulated environments, including on-site support as required.

Health and Safety

  • Commitment to working in a healthy and safe manner and reporting health, safety or environmental concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to divisional health, safety and environmental procedures and compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Use protective equipment as required and participate in health, safety and environmental training.
