Position: Mutuel Clerk - Kentucky Oaks & Kentucky Derby ($18.50/hr)

Churchill Downs Racetrack (“CDRT”), the world’s most legendary racetrack, has been the home of The Kentucky Derby, the longest continually held annual sporting event in the United States, since 1875. Located in Louisville, CDRT features a series of themed race days during Derby Week, including the Kentucky Oaks, and conducts Thoroughbred horse racing during three race meets in the Spring, September and Fall.

CDRT is located on 175 acres and has a one-mile dirt track, a 7/8-mile turf track, a stabling area, and provides seating for approximately 60,000 guests. The stable area has barns sufficient to accommodate 1,400 horses and a 114-room dormitory for backstretch personnel. CDRT also has a year-round simulcast wagering facility.

JOB SUMMARY

The Mutuel Teller is responsible for delivering exceptional guest service while accurately issuing and cashing pari-mutuel wagers during high-volume racing events leading up to and including the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. This position requires precision, integrity, speed, and professionalism in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide excellent customer service, ensuring a positive and memorable wagering experience.
  • Operate a pari-mutuel teller terminal (ticket issuing machine) in tandem with a secured money drawer.
  • Accurately accept and process wagers for live racing and simulcast signals, ensuring tickets reflect the correct race, pool, runners, wager type, and racetrack.
  • Cash winning tickets and vouchers by validating tickets through the terminal ticket reader, followed by accurate change distribution.
  • Accept full responsibility for assigned bank, including all cash handling and liability for shortages.
  • Complies with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies and procedures by monitoring wagering activity for suspicious behavior, accurately completing required documentation, verifying patron identification when necessary, and promptly reporting concerns to management in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Balance drawer and complete all required end-of-shift reconciliations and documentation accurately.
  • Assist guests with race results, understanding wagering basics, and explaining betting options as appropriate.
  • Maintain moral and ethical standards at all times.
  • Resolve guest concerns within scope of authority; elevate complaints and unusual situations to a supervisor when necessary.
  • Support a safe and secure environment for team members, guests, and company property.
  • Participate in required training to enhance knowledge of mutuel systems, event procedures, and compliance standards.
  • Foster a supportive, team-oriented environment during high-volume operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to remain calm, composed, and accurate during peak wagering periods.
  • Demonstrated accuracy in handling large volumes of cash, tickets, and vouchers.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure precise ticket issuance, payout processing, and change-making.
  • Basic math proficiency with the ability to perform quick mental calculations.
  • Comfortably operate computerized wagering terminals.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality, with availability to work/stand/sit for long hours during Kentucky Oaks and Derby week.
  • Positive, motivated team player with a professional and “can-do” attitude.
  • Commitment to integrity, compliance, and superior guest service standards.
