Job Summary and Qualifications

The Human Resources Generalist supports Volunteers of America’s mission by assisting in HR functions that strengthen employee engagement, compliance, and workforce development. This role is responsible for assisting with full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, training, benefits administration, HR reporting and analytics, and adherence to employment laws and agency policies. The HR Generalist partners with leaders and staff across programs to foster a workplace culture rooted in compassion, accountability, equity, and inclusion, while promoting employee growth, organizational effectiveness, and retention.

What

You Should Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive HR experience, preferably in non-profit or mission-driven organizations.
  • Professional HR certification preferred (SHRM-CP, HRCI-PHR, or HR Generalist Certification).
  • Demonstrated experience in recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training, benefits administration, HR reporting, and analytics.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (EEO, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, COA, AAP, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse workforce and foster positive workplace relationships.
  • High initiative, integrity, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills with the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies to attract and retain mission-driven talent.
  • Administer various human resource plans and procedures; assist in the development, implementation, and communication of personnel policies and procedures.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update the employee handbook and policy/procedure manuals.
  • Provide guidance to managers and employees on employee relations issues, conflict resolution, and policy interpretation.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (EEO, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, COA, AAP, etc.) and ensure HR policies align with organizational values.
