Lead a team of safety specialists who support field operations in Natural Gas Distribution, Storage, and Transmission. This role ensures the implementation and continuous improvement of safety programs and training, compliance with regulatory requirements, and promotion of a strong safety culture across operational teams. The Safety Supervisor collaborates closely with operations leadership to proactively identify risks, develop mitigation strategies, and drive safety performance.
Responsibilities- Supervise and mentor a team of safety specialists assigned to support Natural Gas Distribution, Storage, and Transmission operations.
- Manage work plans, team schedules, and safety support coverage to ensure consistent operational support.
- Develop, implement, and monitor safety programs, policies, procedures, and compliance plans in alignment with company standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, DOT, NFPA).
- Lead the design, delivery, and coordination of safety and compliance training for all Gas Distribution, Storage, and Transmission operations.
- Conduct field observations and inspections to verify safe work practices and drive continuous improvement.
- Train and coach management, safety committees, and focus groups regarding safe work practices and safety observation skills.
- Identify operational hazards and work with operations leadership to develop mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
- Conduct training needs assessments to identify skill gaps and develop required technical, regulatory, and safety training.
- Support Operator Qualification (OQ) and other technical certificate programs as required by PHMSA and company standards.
- Evaluate training effectiveness through assessments and testing and enhance efficiency using innovative methods and technologies.
- Analyze safety data and trends to support informed decision-making and identify emerging risk.
- Facilitate team meetings to coordinate work plans and safety support coverage.
- Serve as a liaison and maintain a positive rapport with regulatory agencies and industry groups on safety‑related issues.
- Promote a proactive, accountable safety culture through communication, coaching, recognition, and employee engagement activities.
- Support the Incident Command System structure during gas‑related incidents, providing real‑time safety oversight, hazard identification, and guidance to the Incident Commander and Operations. Ensure safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and control‑room coordination are followed during emergency response and system events.
- Provide back‑up support for team members as needed due to scheduled conflicts, time off, etc.
- Responsible for the oversight and development of staff including the implementation of Performance Excellence Plans (PEPs).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all policies and standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, or related field or equivalent combination of experience on a year‑for‑year basis is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of safety‑related experience in operations.
- Strong knowledge of Natural Gas Distribution, Storage and Transmission systems and associated safety hazards.
- Familiarity with applicable safety regulations and standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NFPA 54, PHMSA 192, etc.).
