Job Description Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides assessment, management, and outcome evaluation for patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. The APRN serves as a resource to educate patients, families, professional nurses, and staff; functions as a liaison between patient, family, and UofL Physicians staff; and participates in clinical research. The APRN should demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical and technical competency, sound clinical judgment, and professionalism in interpersonal communication and documentation, while taking responsibility for ongoing professional development and competency validation.

Position Summary

The Emergency Department APP provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients presenting with acute and emergent medical conditions. This role requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to perform emergency procedures, and excellent communication skills to educate patients and their families. APPs work collaboratively with emergency physicians while also practicing independently in the Fast Track when appropriate. Success in this role requires flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies for both inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment and works in collaboration with a physician to formulate treatment plans and follow-up.
  • Manage specialty clinic.
  • Writes prescriptions for medication, blood tests, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, and therapeutic measures.
  • Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests.
  • Relays appropriate information regarding patient care to the collaborating physician.
  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the patient.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary conferences and ensures appropriate quality care.
  • Provides symptom management for side effects related to oncologic treatment.
  • Assists with admissions.
  • Works both collaboratively and independently.
  • Maintains oversight of survivorship program and survivorship clinic.
  • Shares clinical expertise with professional and supportive personnel.
  • Documents and reports care in an accurate, timely manner.
  • Works effectively with others, collaborating with other health disciplines to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Promotes evidence‑based nursing practice and research by participating in clinical research and leading efforts in scientific inquiry.

  • Maintains professional certification in specialty area; attends and participates in national, regional, and/or local educational conferences.

  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Education
  • Master of Nursing degree from an accredited institution.
Licensure
  • Current licensure in the state of Kentucky as an APRN.
Certification
  • National certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current DEA certificate without restriction.
  • Current BLS.
  • Must be ACLS Certified.
