A professional nurse is an individual accountable for the care of a group of patients. The Registered Nurse (RN) focuses on safe and effective patient and family-centered care, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes. The RN is responsible for assisting in maintaining a financially stable unit. The RN promotes personal development with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and education supported by a Practice Governance framework.

The RN supervises licensed and non-licensed staff members. Applying the caring processes of a recognized model of care, the RN has the responsibility to assess, develop, implement, and evaluate the plan of care. The RN focuses on patient and family comforts, education, and satisfaction. The RN applies educational and professional experiences in the delivery of quality care and mentoring/precepting staff.

Job Responsibilities:

Assessment:
Performs assessments and reassessments per policy and procedure or as warranted by patient condition. The RN demonstrates the ability to make sound independent decisions. Development & Implementation:
Initiates, prioritizes, and implements the plan of care and reviews and revises the plan as indicated. The RN collaborates with patients/families and interdisciplinary services. The RN utilizes resources appropriately to support the needs of the organization, patient, and family. Evaluation:
Monitors and documents responses to clinical interventions.

Education:

Facilitates, coordinates, provides, and evaluates education specific to patient/family needs and as appropriate to the care, treatment, and services provided during their stay and dership:
Delegates tasks to licensed and non-licensed personnel. The RN functions as a mentor/preceptor and encourages teamwork. The RN identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement. The RN participates in quality, safety, and service process improvement efforts and implements practice changes. The RN complies with regulatory standards and participates in the Practice Governance model. The RN is knowledgeable about activities that facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration.

The RN participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. The RN effectively uses communication systems and participates in promoting cost-effective care. The RN gives feedback to co-workers and is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment. The RN promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all. Patient Assessment:
The RN recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. The RN includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, education, and safety needs. The RN synthesizes assessment data into a meaningful whole prior to communication with others. The RN assesses and anticipates the discharge needs of individual patients and families. The RN develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their needs.

Planning:
Collaborates with patients/families to prepare or update the plan of care. The RN makes use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care. The RN begins to use a full range of communication as a means to convey planning. The RN identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. The RN demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems.

Research:
The RN reads journals that contain studies or articles that may be applicable to practice. The RN brings ideas and questions to the staff for assessment of applicability.

Required

Education:

Nursing Diploma or Associate's Degree (ASN).
