Maintenance Technician

Job Summary

The City of Anchorage Public Works Department is seeking a Full‑Time Maintenance Technician to join our team. This position performs a wide variety of tasks in parks and forestry, street maintenance, stormwater systems, facility maintenance, landscaping, and snow and ice control operations. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety‑minded, mechanically inclined, and committed to providing excellent service to the Anchorage community.

• Operate light, medium, and heavy vehicles and equipment including dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, plows, salt and brine spreaders
• Operate power tools and equipment such as mowers, blowers, chainsaws, chippers, trimmers, stump grinders, and excavating equipment
• Help maintain our urban forest, including planting, trimming, pruning, removal, and general care of trees and shrubs
• Perform lawn and landscape maintenance including mowing, edging, planting, watering, and maintaining flower beds
• Conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, and public spaces
• Repair and maintain streets and sidewalks including concrete and asphalt removal and replacement, street signs, and markings
• Perform ice and snow control activities including plowing, salting, brining, and shoveling
• Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment
• Assist with preparation, setup, teardown, and cleanup for community events and festivals
• Perform routine repairs and maintenance of City facilities
• Follow all safety procedures including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
• Emergency Response:
  Ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime that may be required, especially during snow and emergency operations.

• Ability to lift and carry 90–100 pounds in a team setting
• Ability to perform sustained manual labor for extended periods
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and inclement weather
• Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, grease, fuel, chemicals, lubricants, and loud environments
• Knowledge of equipment and tools used in Public Works operations
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Strong communication skills and commitment to customer service

• High School Diploma or GED
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
• Must pass a pre‑employment background check
• Must submit to and pass pre‑employment and random alcohol and drug screening (including cannabis) as mandated by the Department of Transportation

• Prior Public Works or Military experience
• An agricultural, construction, or skilled trades background
• Experience operating heavy‑duty trucks and equipment
