Parks Program Services Leader

Location:

3000 Freys Hill Road, Louisville, KY 40241. Salary: $18.31 - $27.47 hourly.

Employment Type:

Full time (18A), eligible for overtime. Pay Grade: 12.

KY Department of Parks invites passionate individuals to serve the community and educate visitors about Kentucky’s natural and historical wonders. E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park seeks a full‑time Parks Program Services Leader to enhance the park experience through programming and engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead recreational and interpretive programs, including archery lessons, guided hikes, field trips, camps, pool usage, and sports in the gym and outdoor courts.
  • Maintain recreational facilities such as playgrounds, community gardens, multi‑use trails, tennis and pickleball courts, recreation building, gym, and swimming pool.
  • Meet budget expectations through fee‑based programs and renting park resources to user groups.
  • Maintain public relations via the Rec Department phone and email.
  • Promote programs through onsite flyers and social media announcements.
  • Supervise seasonal and temporary Rec Department staff and volunteers.
Skills & Expectations
  • Proficient in public speaking and working with varying ages and abilities.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor recreation, park resource interpretation, physical education, history, environmental education, biology, forestry, botany, zoology, anthropology, archaeology, area studies, cultural studies, art history, geography, parks and recreation management or administration, sociology, paleo anthropology, or a closely related field.

Experience, Training, or

Skills:

None required. Related experience in park naturalist, park interpreter, environmental educator, conservation educator, or planned outdoor recreation may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

None.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed outdoors at an assigned state park. Extensive public contact is required, and activities may involve traversing steep slopes when inspecting, building, and repairing trails.

Probationary Period

Initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
