The Assistant Cook supports a welcoming, nutritious, and enjoyable dining experience for campers and staff by assisting the Head Camp Cook with meal preparation, cooking, baking, and accommodating a variety of dietary needs. This role upholds high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and quality while contributing to an inclusive, camper-centered environment.
The Assistant Cook also helps with kitchen organization, inventory, and food storage, working collaboratively with the kitchen team to ensure smooth daily operations. This position maintains a clean, safe kitchen that meets the standards of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO), the American Camp Association (ACA), and state health regulations. The ideal candidate is adaptable, proactive, and committed to supporting a positive, community-focused dining experience that nurtures the well‑being of campers and staff.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Prepare meals for designated mealtimes, ensuring all food is cooked and served with attention to quality, taste, and nutritional balance to meet the needs of campers and staff.
- Support the Head Cook in supervising kitchen aides, fostering a cooperative and positive team environment.
- Assist with inventory control by monitoring supplies, reporting shortages, and helping to organize food storage areas to ensure efficient kitchen operations.
- Assist the Head Cook in all aspects of meal preparation, cooking, and baking, contributing to a smooth and efficient kitchen operation.
- Prepare pack‑out meals and snacks with the help of kitchen aides, ensuring food quality and accurate portions for campers’ off‑site and evening needs.
- Actively participate in specified camp staff training to understand camp protocols, values, and expectations in food service and safety.
- Maintain kitchen cleanliness at all times, upholding GSUSA, GSNEO, ACA, and local health standards by completing daily cleaning checklists for kitchen and dining hall areas.
- Report any incidents or accidents immediately to the Head Cook or Camp Director, ensuring swift and appropriate action to support a safe environment.
- Uphold the council’s customer service policy, providing a positive, friendly, and respectful dining experience for all GSNEO members and staff.
- Ensure the welfare, safety, and cleanliness of each individual in the kitchen, following and enforcing recommended health and safety guidelines, including regular handwashing, sanitizing, and food handling practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the successful implementation of GSNEO’s goals and objectives.
- Successful experience in food service
- Youth‑oriented program background a plus
- Demonstrated ability to successfully handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people, including external customers
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary
- Well disciplined, able to meet deadlines and be a self‑starter
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred
- Ability to meet schedule requirements, including flexible work week, early hours, nights, and weekends
