Pipelayer/Laborer

Job Description /Position Summary

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Pipelayer to join our Water Division. This position involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of water pipelines and related infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in pipe laying, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively in diverse weather conditions and challenging environments. This is a hands-on, field-based role that may require travel between various project sites.

Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Install, lay, and connect water pipelines ensuring proper alignment and grade
  • Excavate and prepare trenches according to specifications, including grading and leveling
  • Align and position pipe accurately, making adjustments to meet grade requirements
  • Install PVC, ductile iron, and other piping materials as required
  • Apply sealing materials and perform testing to ensure pipelines are properly sealed and leak-free
  • Assist with trenching, back filling, and compaction activities
  • Safely excavate around existing utilities while maintaining awareness of surroundings
  • Operate hand tools and power tools used in pipeline installation
  • Assist with operation of heavy equipment such as excavators and trenchers when needed
  • Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and job specifications
  • Follow all safety procedures, including trench safety, shoring, and confined space requirements
  • Maintain a clean and organized job site, including site preparation and cleanup
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors regarding job progress and issues
  • Maintain productivity while ensuring all work meets safety and quality standards
Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in pipe laying, preferably within water distribution or underground utility systems
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings
  • Strong understanding of trench safety, shoring techniques, and confined space requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of pipeline installation and grade work
  • Ability to determine and achieve proper grade requirements
  • Proficiency with hand tools and power tools used in construction
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Reliable, dependable, and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
Employment Requirements:
  • Valid Drivers License and Reliable Transportation
  • Must provide documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility in accordance with federal I-9 requirements
  • Ability to pass drug test and background check
  • Willingness to travel and work in different areas as needed
  • Commitment to following all Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor
  • Ability to work overtime and extended hours based on workload
  • Must be 18 years of age
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform physically demanding labor including lifting, bending, and climbing
  • Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, and working in trench environments
  • Ability to lift up to at least 50 pounds
  • Capability to work in demanding outdoor construction environments
Work Environment:
  • Outdoor construction job sites in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, noise, traffic, and uneven terrain
  • Work performed in trenches, confined spaces, and active construction zones
  • Fast-paced environment requiring constant awareness of safety hazards
Schedule/Travel Requirements
  • Full-time position
  • Expected hours: 40 to 50 per week
  • Overtime may be required based on project demands
  • Travel required depending on job location
