Position SummaryThe Operations Manager is required to adhere to all plant Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Safe Quality Food (SQF) Quality and Safety, Food Safety, and Bio-Security procedures. This role is directly supported by the Plant Manager. It is the responsibility of the Operations Manager to foster, maintain, and monitor a culture of food safety within their department.
The Operations Manager will strategically oversee a designated area or shift of production. This will be achieved by closely collaborating with shift supervisors, quality control, and maintenance departments to drive and facilitate the continuous improvement of plant processes, systems, and competencies. The primary focus is to identify and act upon opportunities to enhance production efficiency and effectiveness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead and mentor supervisors, emphasizing employee development and the maintenance of a skilled, motivated staff.
- Promote a workplace culture where safety and quality are prioritized, ensuring all personnel carry out their tasks in accordance with established safety policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement plans and processes to minimize manufacturing costs by optimizing the use of employees, equipment, facilities, materials, and capital, without compromising product safety or integrity.
- Manage and assess machine resources to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
- Communicate any operational issues or obstacles to senior management promptly.
- Ensure that staffing and competency levels throughout the manufacturing process meet or exceed required standards.
- Guarantee the achievement of business objectives and production schedules while ensuring product standards that surpass customer expectations.
- Conduct plant-wide and departmental training as mandated.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local food safety regulations, including but not limited to 21 CFR, as well as all relevant company food and personnel safety policies and procedures.
- Oversee the production process to ensure products are produced in a manner that exceeds quality and value expectations, adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices and the policies and procedures outlined in the Safe Quality Food Program.
- Maintain individual professional skills, staying current with the latest developments in production technologies and management practices.
- Eliminate waste and remove constraints from the production process to improve efficiency and boost productivity.
The responsibilities listed above are not exhaustive and may be adjusted or expanded as necessary to ensure the delivery of the highest quality, safety, and security of products to Biery Cheese customers and consumers.
Requirements- Bachelor’s degree in industrial, mechanical, electrical engineering, operations management, or another technical field is preferred. An associate’s degree in a technical field with equivalent experience may also be considered.
- Five to ten years of progressive experience in manufacturing, including leadership responsibilities in plant operations, maintenance processes, project management, manufacturing job estimating, and financial management, with a preference for experience in a food or cheese environment.
- Experience with the Safe Quality Food (SQF) program.
- Knowledge and experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is required; experience with ERP implementation is a plus.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles;
Six Sigma Black Belt certification is a plus. - Demonstrated ability to plan, set objectives and goals, prioritize tasks, measure performance, provide direction, and meet deadlines.
