FUNCTIONTo serve as a primary technical authority and cross-squad leader at James Fisher Technologies, providing technical direction, mentorship, and oversight to multiple Senior Project Engineers and their respective squads. The Principal Engineer ensures design excellence, engineering rigor, and innovation across JFT's portfolio from concept through design, manufacturing, testing, and installation, while driving consistency with organizational technical standards, quality systems, and customer expectations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Technical Leadership & Oversight- Serve as the primary technical lead across multiple engineering squads, ensuring alignment of design methodologies, technical rigor, and execution quality.
- Act as Technical Authority for assigned product lines, systems, or nuclear-class projects, guiding design decisions and ensuring compliance with ASME, ANSI, API, and NQA-1 standards.
- Review, mentor, and when necessary, approve engineering deliverables across squads including design reports, analysis packages, P&, FEA, CFD, and design calculations.
- Define and maintain Design Standards, Analysis Templates, and Compliance Matrices to ensure standardization and repeatability across the organization.
- Lead complex, high-impact technical problem solving and root cause analyses across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, controls, and systems integration).
- Provide technical supervision and mentorship to Senior Project Engineers, Project Engineers, and Analysts.
- Support project technical design reviews at 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% maturity milestones, ensuring readiness for customer submittals and fabrication.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, initiative, and technical excellence within engineering squads.
- Coach engineers on best practices in ASME design, analytical methods, documentation, and customer communication.
- Oversee development plans and succession growth for Sr. Project Engineers under their mentorship.
- Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Quality, Manufacturing, and Business Development to ensure feasibility and manufacturability of designs.
- Support strategic bids and proposals by defining technical scope, estimating engineering effort, and reviewing pricing inputs.
- Serve as a customer-facing technical expert, representing JFT's engineering capabilities in design reviews, audits, and field installations.
- Drive innovation initiatives across squads, including modular design principles, digital workflows, and CAD automation to reduce design hours and improve traceability.
- Provide technical input into Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) programs and Lessons Learned documentation.
- Champion a culture of technical integrity and safety across all design activities.
- Own and evolve JFT's Engineering Design Process, templates, and controlled document structure for engineering deliverables.
- Drive initiatives that reduce engineering cycle time and improve cost predictability through reusable design content and automated documentation.
- Develop and maintain internal training materials, engineering handbooks, and mentorship programs.
Must be able to work on a computer (standing or sitting) for most of the day and use standard office equipment. The ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with team members, customers and vendors is essential. May occasionally lift and carry objects, materials, or equipment, typically under 50 pounds. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing and crawling to access and inspect equipment or systems may also be necessary.
TYPICALWORKING CONDITIONS
Primarily an office environment with work periodically performed in the fabrication/machine shop and outdoor testing areas. Depending on the project, there may be occasional travel to customer job sites. JFT has implemented a 9/80 work schedule, and the office is closed every other Friday.
