Position: General Laborer II Streets- Part Year

Description

The City Attorney’s Office is dedicated to service excellence. The position of Legal Secretary plays a critical organizational role by performing a variety of responsible legal secretarial and confidential administrative professional duties in support of the City Attorney’s Office; and under general direction performs a variety of administrative support functions to the offices of the City Council and City Manager.

Examples of Duties
  • Type from draft, dictation tapes or oral dictation, a variety of correspondence and legal documents, including resolutions, ordinances, legal opinions, contracts, briefs, leases and agreements.
  • Provide litigation support; prepare complaints, cross-claims, answers, discovery requests and responses, motions, and declarations in appropriate formats.
  • Prepare and process correspondence, legal papers and documents requiring knowledge of legal format, terminology and procedures.
  • Gather information and evidence from other departments to assist attorneys in determining appropriate legal action.
  • Maintain litigation calendars, record follow-up trial dates, action dates, and disposition of cases.
  • Intake of new lawsuits; index and court filing of civil and criminal legal documents.
  • Provide general administrative support to the offices of the City Council and City Manager.
  • Coordinate responsive documents to subpoenas and requests for public records.
  • Create and maintain a variety of complex and confidential filing systems, including legal and central office files.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public; screen telephone calls, requests for information and route calls as necessary to appropriate staff members, department or agency. Coordinate and schedule meetings as necessary.
Qualifications Education
  • High school graduate or equivalent supplemented by specialized legal secretarial training.
Experience
  • Four years of increasingly responsible administrative support experience in a legal office.
  • Experience as a legal secretary with emphasis in litigation highly desirable.
  • Experience in a municipal setting desirable.
License
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to work in a public, municipal government office environment.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work under varying circumstances.
  • Ability to input data at a speed of 50 net words per minute. (A Certified typing certificate that is less than one year old must be included with the application. You may fax or mail in a copy of the typing certificate or attach a scanned copy to this application.     however, the City of Redlands has a contract with Arrow Staffing. For a fee of $8.00, they will test at their office at 499 W. State St., Redlands, , and provide a typing certificate.)
